That's interesting. Then why did they waste that person's time and yours? Why didn't they just get on the phone and settle it?

Were they expecting you to not show and they win by default?

Unfortunately, if you win against United there isn't much you can do like that. They don't own their own planes (they lease through a company that they own, but that gives them protection).
There was one on FT a few years ago where someone in London went with the British equivalent of the sheriff to LHR to seize assets for the monies owed when they didn't pay a settlement. It was either CO or UA, I don't remember, I can't find the thread.

Planes may be off limits, but they can always try to seize computers, furniture, ground vehicles, Toblerone bars, etc.

If they thought OP was gonna default, they should have just not showed up. I don't understand the show-up-and-concede approach in small claims court, where the exposure is so limited on default.

Toblerone bars is definitely the way to go when it comes to attaching UA's property.

Turkey pucks. Seize the turkey pucks and the whole airline grinds to a halt.

This is not an original concept on my part but the phraseology is most definitely mine. I was amused to see it verbatim on the Chive recently.

Some posts in this forum may indirectly indicate that somebody may have successfully seized the Toblerones (or UA is hiding them).

Same experience here. Had to file a DOT complaint recently when UA refused to refund a ticket. Got an immediate (within 1/2 hr) response from the DOT with a lot of interest in the details. They also mentioned they are collecting these cases against United.
United paid VERY fast in my case and yes, they were also very polite and even apologetic.

I can only hope the DOT will finally take some (additional) action against United; this time it better hurts because they clearly didn't care when they got the last fine.

I agree, I hope anyone due a refund that fails to get it within a few weeks takes the DOT route and small claims if need be. It is very easy.

I guess they wanted to pay out a smaller amount vs the default, so they showed up. However, when you factor in the cost of flying an employee to the court along with car rental, meals, an entire day lost to travel and a day in court and the fact they paid nearly what was sought in the suit, then they lost way more then they would have if they settled via phone or a default judgement.

Another example of smart thinking by management.

Regrettably, most are less persistent than you. UA profits from these practices in the aggregate. Insurance companies often follow the same approach. Only the unusually persistent get what is their due.

The OP did in this case. Texas think management lost with Judge Judy in this case. Good for the OP! ^
