There was no defense or attempt to defend. They were clearly in the wrong and offered an apology for dropping the ball. They offered to fully refund all monies owed and agreed to offer more to cover the other losses of time/money etc. related to having to file suit.
This was all very easy as compared to trying to get the refund in a timely manner.

Were they expecting you to not show and they win by default?
In San Francisco a number of years ago a guy won a small claims suit against Wells Fargo and when they didn't pay he sent the Sheriff to try to impound the stage coach they use as an icon. They paid pretty quickly.
Unfortunately, if you win against United there isn't much you can do like that. They don't own their own planes (they lease through a company that they own, but that gives them protection).

Planes may be off limits, but they can always try to seize computers, furniture, ground vehicles, Toblerone bars, etc.

That's interesting. Then why did they waste that person's time and yours? Why didn't they just get on the phone and settle it?

There was one on FT a few years ago where someone in London went with the British equivalent of the sheriff to LHR to seize assets for the monies owed when they didn't pay a settlement. It was either CO or UA, I don't remember, I can't find the thread.

Toblerone bars is definitely the way to go when it comes to attaching UA's property.

United paid VERY fast in my case and yes, they were also very polite and even apologetic.
I can only hope the DOT will finally take some (additional) action against United; this time it better hurts because they clearly didn't care when they got the last fine.

Same experience here. Had to file a DOT complaint recently when UA refused to refund a ticket. Got an immediate (within 1/2 hr) response from the DOT with a lot of interest in the details. They also mentioned they are collecting these cases against United.
