I guess they wanted to pay out a smaller amount vs the default, so they showed up. However, when you factor in the cost of flying an employee to the court along with car rental, meals, an entire day lost to travel and a day in court and the fact they paid nearly what was sought in the suit, then they lost way more then they would have if they settled via phone or a default judgement.
