That's interesting. Then why did they waste that person's time and yours? Why didn't they just get on the phone and settle it?
Were they expecting you to not show and they win by default?

In San Francisco a number of years ago a guy won a small claims suit against Wells Fargo and when they didn't pay he sent the Sheriff to try to impound the stage coach they use as an icon. They paid pretty quickly.
Unfortunately, if you win against United there isn't much you can do like that. They don't own their own planes (they lease through a company that they own, but that gives them protection).
There was one on FT a few years ago where someone in London went with the British equivalent of the sheriff to LHR to seize assets for the monies owed when they didn't pay a settlement. It was either CO or UA, I don't remember, I can't find the thread.
Planes may be off limits, but they can always try to seize computers, furniture, ground vehicles, Toblerone bars, etc.
