Neither am I. Unfortunately I haven't seen any pulmonary specialists interviewed about this. I would be curious to know what their consensus is on risk to people without any special medical conditions.

I'd imagine there are enough people who grew up in the LA area (especially the valleys) in the 60s and 70s who are suffering or not suffering the results of a thousand or more accumulated days of what we've been breathing (except for the worst couple of days) that there might be some studies, i.e., non-smokers who have developed lung cancer or other respiratory ailments, blood ailments, and so on. I'd imagine the long term risk to breathing a couple weeks of an AQI in the 200s is pretty low, even if there was some modest physical exertion.

Unfortunately it is necessary to resuscitate this thread as we have hundreds of fires burning across the state (most cause by lightning). Air quality is quite variable based on location, wind currents, etc. For example it is very bad in Santa Cruz but it is good in Monterey. Sonoma, Napa, Oakland are currently bad and San Francisco has both green and red. Bad in Yosemite. We have been fairly lucky in my town as there are major fires to the north and south but I don't want to tempt fate.
Recommend you check purpleair and the local media before you visit. Of course, nobody has spent much time outdoor the past few days with record temps <100 degrees but that too shall change.

Yes and Yes. Don't remember the name ot the vineyard at risk and many evacuation orders. Last I read 6000 homes were in danger but this changes all the time.

Hate to say it but this is life in California, north, central, south, east and coastal.
Many of us live in biomes that are fire climax areas. Additional challenges due to low humidity, drought, beetle infestations, lightning strikes, etc.
Stay safe folks!

It was stunning to see people out and about in Sf last night while running an errand to fetch a second-hand desk. So much outdoor dining. I’m trying to stay home inside the next few days.
btw I think the air issue is enough to stop me from seeking another convertible. I love open top driving but during these 3 months of bad air, enough particles etc can surely filter through the hardware for the convertible top.

I’m not complaining because I’ve visited many countries where the average Joe has it much worse than we do 24/7/365. But that said over past 3 years we Californians have experienced:
- (2018) massive fires (caused by PGE failure to maintain its lines) in Napa, Malibu,, San Diego, and rural areas like Paradise
- (2018) 1-2 months of smoke caused by the fires (led to cancellation of many outdoor events)
- (2019) power supply cutoff as PGEs response to prevent fires
- (2020) COVID
- (2020) State ordered quarantines and closing of businesses which tanked several Large sectors of economy, e.g. movie production, Disneyland, etc) in addition to killing restaurants, tourism as the case elsewhere
- (2020) urban riots and looting
- (Aug 2020) Power shutoffs as the electric grid was overtaxed due to record temps
- (Aug 2020) Extremely rare August lightning strikes which set off 350+ fires 🔥 around the state
- (Aug 2020) Poor air quality across state due to said fires

Could not disagree more. It has nothing to do with the climate. But that’s Omni territory- the purpose of this thread is to keep visitors updated on current Conditions here.
