BART STRIKE IS NOW OVER!!!
BART Striking on Friday Oct 18 -

Key steps re the BART labor dispute:
On August 11, 2013, the San Francisco Superior Court, at the request of Governor Brown, issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting a BART strike or lockout for 60 days, (until midnight, October 10, 2013).
As of October 11, 2013, the cooling-off period has ended and the parties continue to negotiate while BART service continues.
At 3:30 p.m. Oct. 17, BART and two bargaining units reached impasse. FMCS did not deem it could be of further service at this time and was heading back to Washington.
As of 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 BART is CLOSED due to a strike by the 2 major BART unions.
As of Tuesday Oct. 22, BART is expected to re-open by 6am, though full service may not be restored for several hours.. It appears that all issues have been resolved, though the members of both unions must still vote to approve the contracts.

Really the major problem for air travelers (due to now suspended BART strike) is not for SFO customers going into SF (BART is overpriced anyway particularly for families, and takes way too long) but for customer utilizing OAK as an alternative airport for SF. There are no cheap ways to get into SF from OAK except BART.
And AC Transit runs there every half hour as well (when the bus is not serving the ferry terminal, it looks like a quarter mile walk to the main street).

The strike delay has occurred because Gov. Brown has requested that a Board of Inquiry report to him within seven days as to the circumstances of the negotiations and whether a cooling-off period (i.e, for 30 or 60 days) should be ordered.

Of course AC Transit is now threatening a strike, removing a prime alternative method of traversing the East Bay, although one would hope the Governor would not allow both agencies to strike at the same time.

Governor Brown has stated that he'll order a 60 day cooling off period on Sunday if no agreement is met. And, the AC transit strike was averted.

If a 60-day cooling-off period is ordered, it will be ordered by a Superior Court as a form of preliminary injunction.
Governor Brown has obtained a Superior Court hearing for tomorrow, Sunday Aug. 11 at 9:00 a.m. so that the Court could consider his request. He had earlier filed a civil action against BART and the unions representing BART employees seeking an injunction against striking for 60-days. This followed his appointed Board of Inquiry investigation which held a public hearing last Wednesday and reported to him Friday that the two sides to the contract dispute were very far apart and there was a clear likelihood of serious injury to the Bay Area health, safety, and welfare if a strike were to occur.

As a result of the preliminary injunction issued this morning, there can be no BART strike until midnight, October 10, 2013.

AC Transit settled their difference so at least two transit agencies will not be out of commission.

You seem to have completely forgotten about the Samtrans (San Mateo County Transit) bus service from downtown SF to SFO. It was mentioned in the very first post of this thread. Even when there is no BART strike, Samtrans runs a bus service to SFO, but apparently with a BART strike there is a special service (if I understand correctly).
So, one could take the Amtrak bus connector from Emeryville to SF and then Samtrans to SFO. Fewer connections and therefore probably more practical than the itinerary you suggest.

Does it go to the Transbay terminal or just on surface streets in SF?
