Cardiff is an interesting choice, maybe explicitly because it doesn't have competition from the other majors?

Which still is a subsidy. Other airports and regions have burned their fingers pulling off similar deals with Ryanair in the early 00s. That being said, a subsidy isn't immediately illegal and can be authorised in specific circumstances.

Im sure Mykonos will be seasonal, maybe 3-4x a week. In the winter JMK only sees a couple daily ATH flights.
Interesting as this will be the 4th Middle-Eastern destination from JMK, after TLV, CAI, and BEY.
These flights will surely be favoured by all the Australian visitors!

A subsidy is a sum of money. Its the airport which has offered a possible free landing charge. If the welsh gov was paying qatar then fair enough.

No landing fee and cheap service are the only reasons I can think of choosing cardiff over Bristol.

Im gussing belfast will be next UK destination in 2019

leyton2002 welcome to the QR forum.

QR have just announced the route as being one of several that they are considering opening NEXT year! It is unlikely that all of them will actually open.

If Cardiff opens then it will be several months before it will appear in the timetables so patience is needed.

In the case of Cardiff airport the sole shareholder is the Welsh Government. Whether it's a direct cash subsidy, free or low cost landing/airport handling charges, marketing/sales assistance or whatever the net result is government funded incentives.

Two others come to mind:

Bristol is restricted by having a short runway. Even 787's have to operate with weight limitations.

Longer term if Air Passenger Duty is devolved to Welsh Government there is the potential for departure taxes to be lower at Cardiff in the same way as Scottish Government plans for Edinburgh. Some logic would also make Belfast attractive.

It's in the lap of the gods, very much up in the air, as it were

QR is searching for innovative routes to employ its growing fleet - I'm not sure where Cardiff sits in the pecking order ....

Don't forget cargo potential due to longer runway.
