Interesting that you find the upper deck more private. I find the opposite. I have seen very few QF flights where the upper deck is not 100% full (22 passengers on 3-class or 24 passengers on 2-class), and I have seen few flights where the lower deck is 100% full. So if I am not flying on a full flight, I find the lower density of passengers and the wider cabin provides a feel of openness and being on a large aircraft rather then feeling like the ceiling is curved and low and I am squashed into what feels like a 737 cabin with nice seats.

I have to be honest, I have never sat in downstairs J, only Y downstairs and J upstairs. Your points are interesting, and also the previous one about travelling alone and being in the F seat to avoid the middle passenger going past you to get to the aisle, as they are likely to be travelling with the person sitting in D. This all makes sense. My son is booked on QF10 SIN MEL next year. I would think this flight would normally be pretty full, but the "downstairs" point of view is starting to make sense.

D'oh!! Based on your recommendations, I have just changed a seat request SIN-MEL from 17A to 25F. It's for my son, who doesn't like bulkhead seats, and prefers to be in the middle of any cabin. I see your point that 16K would be the best seat upstairs, but I guess you need status to get that. I think the aisle seat downstairs, with immediate access to the aisle, and increased chance of being next to an empty seat, will work out just fine!

.If the UD is the preference, I'd suggest seats towards the rear of the cabin. There is less wind noise (certainly an issue for row 11) and you'll be off the plane earlier. Also, you can easily grab a passing FA to get another drink whereas those at the front of the cabin keep missing out on drinks because those at the back keep asking for top-ups.

One other thought. If I burn some miles for an upgrade request from J to F SIN-MEL, and my son has a special meal request, it may come to pass that the upgrade is awarded too late to arrange the special meal for the F seat. So, either he will be given the J special meal, or offered the standard F meal.
How strict is QF about serving meals "from the wrong cabin"?

that's a very good point. It's only a 7 hour overnight flight anyway, and there's bound to be something he can snack on in F. I'll cancel the special meal request. If he doesn't get the upgrade, he'll have some spare points in his account. Is it correct to say that using QF points on domestic flights is poor value?
