The station access fee you refer to applies when using Opal or when purchasing a non-transfer ticket. I don't think this has ever been applied to terminal transfer tickets.
At one time it used to be a much higher cost from the ticket machine. It used to be $5 from the ticket office and around $13 from the machines.

At one time, the discount rate was only supposed to be charged to those that showed a ticket for flight departing from the other terminals and so had to be purchased from the ticket office

Just out of interest, what would happen if our luggage allowance on the domestic flight was greater than the international one? Presumably Qantas wouldn't have the facilities to collect excess baggage charges? Would they refuse to check the luggage beyond Australia or wouldn't they care?

it does have the facilities to collect charges for other carriers

Alternatively, it could agree onlt to take the bag as far as the international port

If you want to take more than 3 x 32Kg , you are best off purchasing additional lugagge allowance from BA in advance and taking advantage of the lower cost

They can indeed collect excess baggage charges but I am not sure if they can charge the BA rate, and even if they can, it won't be the online advance purchase rate but it would be the airport rate. Without the payment, they won't check that bag in for the international leg.

Since BA's excess baggage charges are extremely reasonable and could be much cheaper than what QF might charge you at the airport (as I said, I am not sure what rate QF will charge you at - it won't be too bad if it's BA's airport rate but QF's rate would be bad). If they charge you QF rate and your bag is heavy, I can assure you that you won't like it one bit - it's AUD 80/kg to Europe. I strongly suggest you buy it online on BA.com in advance.

If you are thinking that you may be able to get away without paying the excess baggage charge for the international leg, it definitely won't work. If you have been 'checked in' for the flight by the time you find that out, it'll cost you more because you probably won't be able to pay for excess baggage online for the BA leg then.

Just curious what people are taking on planes when 2 people could possibly be thinking about needing excess baggage above the combined 192kg they are allowed to bring?
Especially if it is just a holiday

I'm hoping we will always find ourselves in the position that we have 3 x 32kg each; I'll really be trying to avoid taking more than that as getting all those bags in and out of the airport would be enough of a challenge! I honestly was asking as I was interested and I didn't expect Qantas would be able to collect monies for BA....

We moved here earlier in the year but bought way too much stuff on the boat. Just taking some back as it's easier to store in the UK than here and we'll be back living in the UK in a few years.

Hit a bit of a problem with this. I've bought the extra online and it shows fine in MYB but no sign of any email receipt. When I go into MYB and ask it to resend the tax invoice I get this message:

"An error has occurred while trying to resend the tax invoice for the additional baggage booked with your flights"

Our QF flights were booked as Avios redemptions so maybe that is the issue but what can I do if Qantas won't send me the receipt they say I need!?

Maybe you should give Qantas a call to see if they can send it to you.

In all likelihood they do have the record but they sometimes ask to see the receipt because of system issues etc.

It's not that much more to pay at the airport for QF domestic excess baggage (AUD 40) although of course you don't want to pay twice.

However, if you have only just booked it, then don't worry too much. It's taken them up to 24 hours to send me the receipt (that's just for a normal booking made on QF website).

Well I am now back in the UK after a trouble free journey; thanks to all for your help.

We took copies of everything we could think of to the airport but all that was requested was the boarding passes for the international flights (we'd already checked in online). The lass checking us in clearly knew it was possible to check the baggage through but was a bit hazy on the details, but after requesting a bit of help from a colleague, it was dealt with without any issues and all six bags arrived at Heathrow OK. Never did get an email receipt for the extra QF baggage payment though.

The airside Qantas bus transfer was easy and quick; we just had to show our international boarding passes and passports.

And the QF First lounge was very nice, especially the staff. How nice to get a massage without having booked and one delivered by a human rather than a machine. Puts the BA experience to shame.

It's strangely not that popular at certain time of day (BA departure time being one of them) and it is easy to get. Try it other times though, and it's very difficult to come by. I think I've missed out just a few times on BA departure (out of dozens) but my success rate has been down to about 20% on some other departure times.

BA do offer human massages in their spas as well, by the way...

Hi

Hopefully someone can answer this question i have concerning international baggage allowance.
We are flying from Tokyo to Sydney with Qantas in business class and our baggage allowance is 40kg each, can this allowance be spilt over two bags per person?, as we will be travelling with two bags each from a previous flight or will we need to purchase extra baggage allowance for the other bag?.

Many thanks in advance.

Just found this on our booking, although it does not answer my first question it could well save us on our domestic baggage allowance.

About your baggage

Eligible Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club members are entitled to an additional non ticketed checked baggage allowance.

No single item of checked baggage may exceed 32kg (70lb) and all cabin baggage must fit under the seat in front of you or in an overhead locker, including musical instruments.

Checked Baggage may at times need to be transported on a later flight, in which case we will deliver your Checked Baggage to you.

If transferring from a Qantas Domestic flight to a Qantas International flight, or vice versa, within 24 hours, the International Baggage Allowance is accepted on both flights. Present both tickets when checking baggage in. Find out more about your baggage allowancesThis will open a new tab or window in your browser..

Question now is from the paragraph above does this mean we can take our international allowance onto our domestic flight or is this just for Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club members only?.

The 40Kg does need to be split over at least 2 bags since no bag can weigh more than 32Kg

Yes, that is a benefit QF provides for everyone (incentive to fly QF) and is not related to QFF status.
