Baggage allowance

HI am new to this forum and possibly about to ask a silly question but,,Will be travelling ADL-HAM via MEL and DBX on Emirates, with Qantas being the ADL-MEL interline carrier. Qantas has a 23Kg baggage allowance and Emirates 30kg in Y class, i take it we will be restricted to the 23kg of Qantas or are we allowed to carry the full 30kg on all legs?

Am not a seasoned traveller so apologies for the probable stupid question

On separate tickets, 23kg, on a single ticket with no stopover at MEL, 30kg per the MSC rule. If trying to maximize baggage allowance, QF has some fares that offer 2x23kg for this trip (e.g. OWE fare).

am unsure of tickets but it was purchased as a emirates fare from adelaide to hamburg but we have to fly qantas to melbourne first to connect to emirates... so i take it definatly 23kg allowance to melbourne then 30kg from there?

If it is a single fare, then it is a single ticket, and you get 30kg ADL-MEL as long as you aren't staying overnight in MEL but connecting straight onto the EK flight. Your receipt shows your ticket number, so you can tell if you have 1 or 2 tickets.

If it is a single ticket, then I believe that you will get 30Kg the whole way. If you phone EK or QF and get the Qantas booking reference, you should be able to retrieve the booking on the Qantas "Manage your booking" and it should show the allowance

Have you tried looking up the booking and allowance on:

Maybe even:

I don't think QF has implemented the MSC baggage allowance computation software yet (few airlines have), so it is a manual process ... fair enough as <<1% of pax are affected. So, you have 2 remedies: phone QF and ask to have your PNR annotated that you are entitled to 30kg free baggage allowance as EK is the Most Significant Carrier on your ticket; take a printout of your ticket to ADL checkin showing the EK leg, and also print out the IATA MSC rule (search this forum for lots of past discussion and links to it, or just Google). Between those 2 you'll be fine.

Thanks very much for the info, will be disappointed if we are stuck with only 23kg allowance, that extra 7kg would be very handy

QF does not honour MSC rules. I emailed them to ask what my allowance would be for LHR-SIN-MEL all in J with the LHR-SIN bit on BA (therefore making BA the MSC as it goes from TC2 to TC3) and they said it will be QF's 32kg, not BA's 3pc.

Therefore the OP gets 23kg unless he can talk himself into the 30.

Did you actually have a booking?

Did you actually refer to the new IATA "Most Significant Carrier" rules within your email?

I have serious issues with such Customer Service supplied information when things change - some agents are very slow on the uptake.

It isn't a choice for any IATA airline; the MSC rule (IATA regulation 302) is mandatory. So QF absolutely does honour it, however implementation is not yet automatic and most airlines have problems with staff not being overly familiar with it. I have inquired, and have it on good authority that showing the MSC rule upon check-in is guaranteed to work at QF. However, note that only the fare baggage allowance is covered by MSC, not any FF baggage priviliges (so WP would get the COS allowance even if QF is the MSC, similarly for BAEC status holders).

Yes to both, and I gave the booking number also.

One final thing ... was it ticketed prior to April 1?

If not, I would reply to them stating that Qantas would be in breach of IATA Resolution 302 in relation to its "Most Significant Carrier" policy if that were the case and could they please re-check.
