Doing the overnight PER-SYD/ MEL flight regardless of aircraft is a hard way to travel. 4 hr flight time doesn't leave a lot of time for rest. I would save the J dollars get a hotel room by the airport and catch the 5am departure (which used to be a 734 in convertible seats).

Aren't some virgin flights a 73H? Doesn't virgin also have a middle seat on the 332?

Isn't the seat pitch on QF the same on the 2x2x2 config planes as the 2x3x2 config domestic 332?

Agree the redeye is tough but still think QF could learn from AA.

Recently did the LAX-JFK redeye.
Lights off for takeoff and stayed off.
No announcements, no food service
DRinks and snacks on request but most tried to sleep.
Lights on about 20min out.

Enabled you to maximise sleep, coffee and breakfast on the ground at 6am.

IMHO this is the way to run the flight.

Yes it would be good but QF will need to create a separate "product" as they advertise, F&B service, IFE etc on their flights so having a "Redeye Flyer" product as listed above would ensure people's expectations are set differently.

the only thing I wish AA would do better (not sure if this has changed very recently) is offer a hot towel service prior to arrival on red-eyes, especially if you are in First. It would cost them a few cents but would make arrival just that more better.

The DJ 330s that I am booked on for next week SYD-PER and PER-SYD show a 2-2-2 layout in business

they do on some of their 332s. Both have seat pitch 60+, but seat width is about an inch and a half less on the higher density.

^ +1
A hot towel is one of those little luxuries on a long business class flight.
That's one of the main reasons why I fly long-haul business class on South-East Asian airlines. There is an endless supply of thick, hot face towels! It's worth paying more just for that alone.

Plus $6MM in legal fees for the union negotiations for this extra service item.

Funny that when I suggested QF introduce the BA sleeper style service for flights out of Asia to Australia I was shouted down by those who wanted to be drunk and fed.

None the less a sleeper service still wouldn't make much difference on such a short flight time. You really cannot operate on less than 4 hours of sleep, cradle seat or otherwise. Much better off getting the early morning departure out of PER instead.

Rubbish!

I regularly function on about two hours sleep per day (not sure whether it is day or night) during the fire season, but during the fire season it is usually adrenalin that kicks in. That and the fact that I am driving a fire truck, with crowning fires arounf me, adrenalin ALWAYS kicks in.

OT for this topic though, but I see your point. Main meal in the PER lounge, brekkie (for those who have the time) on arrival in the lounge would be an option, thus maximising sleeeping time, provided they provided a nightcap before snuggling in.

Checking a suspicious looking seat map for today's PER-SYD. Looking at the QF seat maps there are 3 configs of Airbus 330-200:

* 36 Business; 199 Economy - International*
The international one has nothing between row 35 and 45.

* 36 Business; 268 Economy - Domestic*
This is the culprit with Y+ for J, it has a window-side pair of seats in row 43.

* 36 Business; 265 Economy - Domestic*
The last one is the normal domestic config, with no row 43.

According to AFF the newly-delivered VH-EBV is ANOTHER of these configs with no business-class seating.

And the word is that they were designed and ordered for JetStar but somehow ended up with Qantas because of delays in other new aircraft.

Another suggestion is that Mr Joyce has started to downgrade the entire fleet to Jetstar specs, to make it easier to interchange aircraft between JQ and QF.

Either way, the seating is identical to Jetstar.

Can't imagine they were ever destined for Jetstar given jq should have had about 15 787s by now.
Instead they have 11 330s that were destined for Qantas
