I wish I had the courage of my convictions to complain about such treatment. I do not, precisely because I have no faith at all in the US government. I am old enough to remember Joe McCarthy and J Edgar Hoover, and I think the US is there again. So, I duck and keep my head down. Am I defaulting on my responsibilities? Probably.

I would. And I would copy my elected representative on the claim. This is why I won't be separated from my belongings.
The worst that happens is that they deny the claim. The best is that you get reimbursed AND they enforce the "no separation from belongings" policy.

To the elected representatives? Snail mail letter to the LOCAL offices of the representative (should be on their website). Better if you hand-deliver... both of those show much more "interest" and "Involvement" than an email. Emails often don't get read.

Happened me today in BOS. I went to get my stuff from the trays only to find my prescription glasses were missing. Someone had taken mine and left theirs. These were around $200 (due to lenses etc). Mine were black and these were a browny-grey.
It was the first class security line at BOS. TSA personnel did check the belt and the areas around the belt. The Admiral's Club announced it and a gate agent also announced it to the terminal. Nobody turned the glasses in.
Their point is that nobody told me to take my glasses off but I have been told to in the past so it has become a habit. They did separate me from my belongings for the pat down. Is there anything I can do to claim for the cost of the glasses from them?

Just to update on this. I sent an email to the TSA via the website and received claim forms. Filled them out and faxed them back. Got a letter at the end of April to say my claim had been assigned a 'control number' and a handler would be in touch soon. Received an email around the middle of June with a 'questionnaire' regarding my claim. I filled that in, sent it back. Heard nothing since so I rang this evening for an update. The handler said a settment letter was sent out this week, I'll need to accept it (she didn't know how much it was for) and sent it back before a cheque is issued. Hopefully it's for the full price of the glasses.

This is actually a positive development. My wife filed a minor claim--thankfully not for something like missing glasses--and the TSA denied it, saying that by law they were only responsible for claims "due to actions by their employees." (Uh, it was your employee who confiscated something which was NOT prohibited, against policy, idiots!) It took them nearly 4 months to deny the claim, with the only appeal to some kangaroo court.
