Thanks again for all your help!

There is a fairly high probability that weekend will be fine. We are having one of the driest summers in history; I can’t remember the last time is rained. September is normally still nice. It is not like the rainy season all the sudden hits on October 1st each year.

With the Bus Tunnel closed, many merchants have some decent coupons to promote being downtown. You need a transit pass, but I've never been asked for it.

Chex? Are you feeling OK? You usually have great ideas, but this one is gross, odd, and creepy.

New Slogan

Seattle
metronatural

"Seattle offers the best of both worlds," Don Welsh, the bureau's president, said in a news release. "We have a vibrant urban center surrounded by pristine wilderness and outdoor recreation."

Say wa? Metronatural, Seattle's new tourism slogan, fails to impress

I've always enjoyed checking out the Christmas Ships.

Nightly, December 1-23rd
"The festival is a ship-to-shore holiday celebration that has become a local Northwest tradition for 57 years. Aboard ship, some of the finest Northwest choirs sing holiday greetings. These performances are broadcast via speakers to bonfire sites and to other boats participating in the parade.

"On shore, thousands of people, young and old alike, gather around roaring bonfires to share the joy of the season. On the water, other decorated boats join in the festivities by following the Christmas Ship™, forming the largest holiday flotilla in the world, cruising to over 45 waterfront communities."

My favorite two things to show people when they come to Seattle:
  • Jimi Hendrix grave at Greenwood Memorial Park, Renton, Washington
  • Bruce and Brandon Lee grave at Lakeview Cemetery, Capital Hill, Seattle (most of the famous Seattlites from history are also buried here, John Nordstrom, Yessler, Arthor Denny & more. Get a cemetery map here.

A couple of quick questions for our resident Seattle experts regarding two upcoming trips I have:
(1) How's the skiing at the Summit at Snoqualmie for a beginner (only been skiing once before, although I took a lesson and got the hang of it fairly quickly)?; and

(2) Are one-way car rentals with a pick-up at SEA and a drop-off at YVR or vice versa cost prohibitive? Any tips to get a decent rate or specific car companies who might have better rates for doing this?
Thanks for any advice.

#1 It seems to me that about 80% of the Seattle area skiers learn at Snoqualmie. There's a good balance of hills there for a beginner (lots of greens and blue trails at Summit Central) and the Pass has been getting good amounts of snow this year.

I don't know about 1-way car rentals to/from SEA. The rental taxes at SeaTac are higher than normal and a bunch of people have just taken a cab to their downtown hotel and rented from a city rental agency to avoid the Airport User fees.

Snoqualmie attracts a lot of beginners. It is the closest to Seattle - a mere 50 miles on I-90, as such, it is pretty crowded on weekends. The $46 lift ticket gives you access to all of their ski areas which are connected by shuttle bus. In general the snow has been exceptionally good this year but several days without snow can make things icy. The rope tow and magic carpet is only $9 and you can upgrade to a lift ticket later. :D

I can't imagine that rate would be "decent" since it would require someone to drive the car back. A good option is Amtrak. It leaves near downtown Seattle at 7:40 AM and arrives in Vancouver just before noon (4 hours later). It is typically $25 (AAA) but sometimes slightly more as the fare goes up based on demand. The ride is comfortable and scenic. Remember to take headphones with you to watch the movie along with any food and drink to avoid the pricey food on board. The train station in Vancouver is also close to downtown (maybe $5 taxi ride) however, it would require a much longer taxi ride to get to YVR airport from the train station. This would work if you were going to spend some time in Vancouver and did not need a car.
