I was charged excess baggage by CX when I travelled BKK-TPE (via HKG) as part of my current DONE4 RTW.
Here's the facts. My allowance said 30kg on the ticket and to be honest I checked in with 50kg over two bags.
They charged me 16kg extra. The check in agent was wearing a Thai Airways uniform but working at a Cathay counter.
I was surprised and annoyed mainly because I had already done about a dozen sectors with much the same weight. This was the first time I'd been on a CX flight. The previous check in at BA in LHR I was told "you are a little overweight sir" but it was left at that. However, I believe CX are nazi's in this department.
From what I've been reading and some advice from others, since my itinery included the USA I am entitled to have 2 bags each with 32kg. That gives me a total of 64kg allowance in this case.
Perhaps the check in agent didn't realise I was on a RTW or perhaps he was getting a bonus everytime he successfully charged excess fees?

If the ticket says 30kg then the check-in did nothing wrong in billing you the extra. What is wrong is that no DONE4 should have a 30kg baggage allowance - it should be 2pcs. So the error is with whoever last re-issued the ticket for you. The check-in agent can only go with what's printed on the ticket, so don't blame them.
The US luggage fee applies on any flights that are direct connections with flights in and out of the States. Once you have a layover, the US limits no longer apply. I know Americans who work in Pakistan. They plan their layovers on trips coming to the States, rather than on the return, as they want to use their full US luggage allowance.
Actually... irrespective of what it says on the ticket for baggage allowance, the correct allowance is 2 pcs. Once a RTW touches the americas (north or south), you are allowed 2 pieces of baggage at 32kg per piece worldwide. The only exception to the rule is within north america on AA where they restrict the weight of the bags to 50lbs each. But you are still allowed 2 pieces.
The check-in agent may be following the rules.. but you should have highlighted the fact to CX that you are on a RTW ticket and that you are permitted the aforementioned 2 pieces worldwide. CX should not have charged you the excess rate. You have a valid case and you should be able to get a refund. You would of course have to contact CX at BKK airport directly for this.
TG is the ground handling agents for CX in BKK. They are not very well versed in ticketing procedures. Or anything for that matter - but that is a different story.

CX should not have charged you the excess rate. You have a valid case and you should be able to get a refund. You would of course have to contact CX at BKK airport directly for this.

I have been told that the checkin staff go off what is on the ticket whether it is correct or not ... you may need to claim compensation from the ticket issuer if the airline wont refund you . I used to work for a consolidator and from time to time we had to reissue tickets before departure after human or system error resulted in tickets with incorrect baggage allowances being issued - it could get very nasty if it wasn't picked up before departure

Is this only for oneworld? Many of my Pakistani friends stopover in DXB and LHR on their way to North America, and have never had a problem. Emirates / Gulf Air / PIA / Qatar Airways all state that the piece system applies to/from North America regardless of whether the journey is broken by a stopover. Originally Posted by SanDiego1K

If the piece baggage allowance applies, it applies to the entire journey, even though a through journey may be broken by a stopover. The piece concept still applies when the passenger re-checks in at an intermediate station to continue travel.Weight baggage allowance applies otherwise.
