Ticket revalidate vs reissue question

A real thorny issue for the ticketing gurus as it pertains to the new BA avios earning scheme.

It has been stated here that date changes ONLY result in a revalidation of the ticket. A new ticket is not issued. So, what happens when I change the date of a flight after 18-Oct-2023. Will BA see this as a reissue and therefore use revenue for my 3 AA segments or will it be distance based? I'm mainly worried about my DFW-LHR AA flight as it would go from 14K avios to maybe 5K avios. My ticket was issued by AA in July, ex-TYO.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

This isn't strictly true, as some GDS systems aren't capable of revalidating and so always reissue. A reval would probably work in your favour, if it can be done, as the tkt date of issue would still be July, whereas what would happen with Avios earnings after a reissue is an unknown at this point. There should be a way for BA to determine which earning method to apply, but there will probably be some mistakes when the changeover happens, that you'd have to follow up on and request re-consideration. We don't know yet though.

Apologies for reactivating this old thread. I did ask this in another thread but got no firm answer. Do we know yet what happens in this case? I want to change away from a (now) DAT operated flight booked before October 18th, 2023. BA told me it's possible but the ticket would be sent to the back office. They could not tell me if this would be revalidation or reissue. Failing that, CE is available (and empty) on the DAT service, so an alternative might be to UUA. Same question there? has anybody done this?

I think you will get your best response, if anybody knows, as to how BA will deal with this in the BA forum. People have been changing away from wetlease flights operated by others (and now DAT) for BA for sometime. The DAT thread in the BA forum has some people reporting that their change from the DAT operated flight is confirmed while on the phone with the agent (maybe you can ask in that thread if people are being issued new ticket numbers?).

But if earning at the old rates is very important then I wouldnt chance it.

Should be able to be handled by the frontline agent, not sure why it would need to be queued. If the same bkg class is available on the new flight, it should be a reval, but the option isn't always available for agents to use (to prevent misuse). Many agts, even back office ones, get into a a rhythm of invol exchanges, so may just reissue anyway.

I still don't know what effect that may have on your Avios earnings though.

Yes, I did think that but found this thread and gave it a try.

I'm not bothered about the Avios for this flight alone, but the same ticket has multiple long-haul I-class sectors and the cost of the ticket was low. The cost in Avios for the whole itinerary of dropping out of the old Avios regime would be over 30,000. It just really pi$$es me off that BA changed carriers, threw us out of our seats into random other seats right at the back, said nothing and now act dumb when I try and change back to what I originally booked. I'm going to have to grin and bear it, I fear. Perhaps there's an AUP available so I can at least simmer with a skinfull of G+T.

My experiences, though it may be a one-off. I made some changes before flying my AONE3 in Feb and tickets were reissued after 18-Oct. THe JAL and AS segments earned based on distance. The 2 AA segments earned avios based on distance/cabin/elite bonus, not revenue. I thought that AA flights earned avios based on revenue. It could be that the revenue by segment for these RTW flights are not obvious, therefore distance based avios earning. Something like a BA holiday package.
