Any of you experts able to critique this route?

Although new to this I’ve spent a while wrapping my head round the various Alliances rules and regulations and think Oneworld is the best bet. I’m looking to do a RTW in November this year. (Incidentally I’m looking at seeing these places not just passing through.)

Am I right in thinking the following routing is OK for a OneWorld Explorer 4 Continent rules?

LON-TAS (Inter Cont Segment)
TAS-DEL (Surface via China)
DEL-HKG (Asia Segment)
HKG-SIN (Surface via Vietnam/Thailand etc)
SIN-DPS (Asia Segment)
DPS-PER or DPS-DRW (Inter Cont Segment)
PER/DRW-AYQ (SWP Segment)
AYQ-CNS (SWP Segment)
CNS-SYD (Surface)
SYD-NOU (SWP Segment)
NOU-VLI (Will buy separate Return flight from New Caledonia to Vanauatu on Air Vanuatu)
VLI-NOU (Will buy separate Return flight from New Caledonia to Vanauatu on Air Vanuatu)
NOU-SYD (SWP Segment)
SYD-AKL (SWP Segment)
AKL-PPT (Surface – Will use other FFP for single on Air NZ from AKL-PPT)
PPT-IPC (Inter Cont Segment)
IPC-SCL (South American Segment)
SCL-UIO (South American Segment)
UIO-SCL (South American Segment)
SCL-EZE (South American Segment)
EZE-MAD (Inter Cont Segment)
MAD-MRS (Europe Segment)
MRS-LON (Europe Segment)

It’d be 1 segment over the SWP limit but I could buy another segment for this for an extra 75 GBP. I’d also have an extra 2 Asia segments probably for a return flight to HKG – not sure if I’d use this or where I’d go.

Also does anyone have an opinion for the best FFP for Oneworld? Although I’m UK based, BA seems not very good, as I’m an economy traveller. I’d be looking for the best mileage from economy to use primarily for travel awards rather than upgrades. Achieving higher status/tier levels would be nice but not essential.

Thanks

spookily similar (for the SWP and SAm) sections to a trip we are looking at starting in July, but in reverse

All looks fine to me - which FFP are you going to use to get the single award ticket on ANZ ?? Currently it looks like we are going to use UA miles for a *A award - it would be a return, and we'd just throw away the return portion. However, if you are also thinking of doing this, note that *A awards from Oceania zone (inc PPT) to NZ *or Oz are only 20k, so you could fly SYD-AKL-PPT on this award with a stopover in AKL and save yourself the cost of the extra SWP segment.

Hope that helps

Heard somewhere that QF has or is going to drop the DPS-SIN segment, so you might want to check to make sure it's still there. You also have five segments in South America, so be prepared to pony up another few pounds there.

Sounds like an *awesome* trip. I am jealous and hope you have a good time.

That is right, they are using Australian Airlines (AO) on that sector doing a SYD-DPS-SIN run, however no OW affiliation with this child of QF.

Thanks for the responses. I assume if I can't do SIN-DPS then I could use an extra Asian segment to do SIN-HKG-DPS.

Incidentally, does anyone know if/when LanChile stil fly from Punta Arenas - Falkland Islands. It appears on their route map, but doesn't seem to appear on any timetables.

I also found LanChile's routemap to be a work of fiction (oops, that should probably read 'slightly free with the exact truth').
I asked them about the CUN-HAV route which they show, and they don't fly that either
Basically, they said that the timetable shows where they fly, the route map is just a 'guide'.

PS I agree with christep - you've only got 4 segs in SA.

Right, four. I could have sworn I saw five. Too many drugs too early in the morning.

The Cathay timetable for 15 May is up, and correctly (I think) shows QF's departure from the SIN-DPS route at the end of July. It's once a week till then. After that I think they will only be flying PER-DPS, no DRW or SYD. Coulda missed it, tho.

SIN-HKG-DPS or BKK-HKG-DPS is fine, but if you're paying for extra segments, you may find that an off-OWE segment won't cost much more than the OWE tag-on. Two years ago we bought DPS-SIN on SQ in F for a bit over USD300 but the ITN fare for the opposite direction was over $400 the last time I looked, in C. No F was offered. If you're looking for max miles instead of travel convenience, then of course that's not the way to go.

They still fly to the Falklands.. but it's only once a week on Saturdays. They also fly the CUN-HAV route as well but they may not have traffic rights.

I just brought a One World ticket from STA trying to do this South Pacific island hop from South America to New Zealand.
Was hoping to go Santiago - East Island - Papeete - Auckland. I was told this is not possible as Papeete and Easter Island do not link on the OneWorld ticket - So how are you going to do it for an Inter Cont Segment?
The most annoying thing is that I was then told that the Santiago - Auckland route is about to be stopped so I need to do Santiago - Los Angeles (no stay allowed!!!) - Auckland.

Hmmm, I'm not sure I agree with what you were told. SCL-PPT should be OK (there is nothing in the rules that prevents it), however, PPT-AKL will not be as this is a QF codeshare flown by TN, not a OW carrier. You should be able to do this as an open segment, buying the PPT-AKL ticket separately.

If you do need to go via LAX, you have a 14 hour layover to catch a little shut eye.

BTW, the LA WWW site shows the SCL-AKL trip operating into at least September.

(Edited to add note about LA SCL-AKL.)

Thanks for the comments, I am not allowed to stay for a night in LA apparently – but will get about 10 hours to look around the town. (possibly as I will be in NA before SA).
The miles is a great pint, I am unsure of the situation though with who/what to do about joining a frequent flying programme for my RTW trip though.
Also I get the impresstion that buying the PPT-AKL ticket separately will cost a fortune.
