Hmmm, I'm not sure I agree with what you were told. SCL-PPT should be OK (there is nothing in the rules that prevents it), however, PPT-AKL will not be as this is a QF codeshare flown by TN, not a OW carrier. You should be able to do this as an open segment, buying the PPT-AKL ticket separately.

If you do need to go via LAX, you have a 14 hour layover to catch a little shut eye.

BTW, the LA WWW site shows the SCL-AKL trip operating into at least September.
