Is it possible to date flights far enough in the future and use those bookings when ready to move on to the next destination? Much like how I used those paper rtw tickets many years ago.
The dates I wanted for the last three flights on the itinerary are too far in the future for the GDS that AA uses (sabre?). So dummy dates have been entered for them. I will change those dates, for free, closer to the time I want to fly (October 2023) |

According to this AA shouldn't have an issue issuing me a DONE4 originating from OSL as long as I include a transatlantic or transpacific flight on their metal? The RTW ticket I have just started (and which I purchased from AA) has an AA transatlantic flight (AA codeshare on Royal Air Maroc flight) and that was all I needed to have for AA to agree to ticket. The AAgents have always talked about the requirement being for an "over water flight". I have always assumed that to mean either a transatlantic or a transpacific flight. I don't know if other inter-continental flights would be acceptable, for example North to South America. |
Thank-you jerry a. laska and pandaperth. With that, the last question. If my e-ticket has me flying out of an airport and there are no seats available with the airline it is booked for, can I switch to another OneWorld airline that has available seats(like the good ole days)?

On my recently booked DONE4 purchased through AA Dallas the agent waived the requirement for an over the water sector on AA as a code share…..surprised but that’s what happened and subsequently ticked and reticketed as future sectors came into date range.

I am contemplating to book my first ever RTW ticket in biz. I was debating *A vs OW, but am leaning towards OW. The only thing certain is that I want to pass through Japan, the US West coast (home) and Central Europe (second home). I started to play around a little with the route planner on the OW website, which I do not find overly intuitive. Is there a guide anywhere on FT (or elsewhere) how to tackle things for a newbie? If possible at all I would like to book using my US Amex plat, in order to earn 5x MR (either with an airline directly or through Amex Travel). What are currently the cheapest places to start? It appears to me that Japan is reasonable (at the current exchange rates). Is there a European starting point in a similar price range? EDIT: I found the "Explorer User Guide" here on FT. EDIT2: It appears that ex-OSL and ex-BUD are in a similar price range as TYO? |
I haven't checked the latest exchange rates, but I believe the current cheapest starting places are:
Norway, Hungary, Japan, Pakistan for a DONE4 (4-continent business class) their base fares are around USD5,500 |

Thanks, anabolism and Gardyloo, for the excellent suggestion re: booking with AS. My personal experience with AS has been can-do, customer-centered service, which could be very useful when dealing with ticketing and changes (expected and unexpected). I'm hoping to ticket my DONE4 ex-BUD pretty soon for travel mid-Spring and will share what I learn about fuel surcharges. It will also be interesting to see how willing they are to construct a complex itinerary that may only include a single AS flight but also includes many requests for specific codeshares on other carriers.

If I route CPT-DOH-North America-ASIA-CPT/JNB it would be a DONE3? And if anyone has a current fare I’d appreciate it.
