But you're still limited to 16 flights total. Also, of course, six flights in North America, not four.

That's correct, I was more getting at how being restricted to 2 stopovers in Europe / ME on an ex-CAI or ex-OSL can be quite limiting since DOH is such a nice stopover to nest other good deal fares into. 2 stopovers in Asia on an ex-TYO doesn't really bother me, but I can see others who want to 'do it all' finding it limiting.

If I book an ex-Canada DONE3 through AA, I assume I can reprice it into a DONE4 (ie adding in Australia between North Am and Japan) after booking assuming all the inventory in D is available (and it sounds like subject to a $125 fee)?

Plus the difference in base fare between a DONE3 and a DONE4.

Right - sorry. That's what I meant. Thank you!

And going the other way (Done4 to Done3), one receives a refund in the base fare net of the service fee of $125?

I have some newbie questions for DONE4. I just learned that i booked DONE4 according to JAL website (otherwise I was not sure lol)
1. There is no total flown mile restrictions such 34K, is that correct? The reason I am asking this is because oneworld web kept giving me this error when booking
2. The total of 16 segments including the free transfers. So if I book a ticket to London and start in MAD, LON-MAD segment counts as one segment even though the flight is not included? This might be the reason why I kept getting an error when I tried to add segments under 34K miles at the time of booking....
3. How about landing in LGA and departing from JFK. Does the transfer between LGA and JFK count as a free trasnfer segment?
4. Within each continents, there is a limit of number of segments I can fly. 4 segments in Asia. Does it include the free transfer? So if booked two flights with two segments each: JFK-HND-BKK-HKG and HND-HKG-LON, how many segments in asia am I using??? 3 or 4 including the free transfer?

No. It counts as one of your sixteen. I ran into this with LHR/LCY and caused me hours of agony with QF on the phone trying to figure the error...

IIRC years ago certain pairs of airports were considered coterminus for OneWorld Explorer tickets, and thus you did not burn one of the 16 segments to move between them. However, as I said, it was years ago and that has long since been eliminated.

You are correct. This is a known bug in the system. You cannot book OneWorld Explorer tickets using the online tool if they exceed 34K BIS miles. But this limit does not exist in the rules. The system problem just means that you have to book these tickets by calling a OneWorld carrier.

Huh? I don't understand your question. If you don't mind rewording it, I'll try to answer.

As already mentioned, LGA-JFK will count as one segment.

Again, what do you mean by "free transfer"? JFK-HND-BKK-HKG is two Asia segments, and HND-HKG-LON is one Asia segment. JFK-HND and HKG-LON are intercontinental flights which do not count against your per continent limit of four everywhere other than North America in which you're allowed six.

pandaperth Apr 29, 2024 10:08 am

You keep saying "free transfer". I'm guessing that what you mean is "Surface Segment". Is that correct?

Correct. There is no mileage restriction on a DONE ticket. The continual display of the error is a known bug in the booking tool.

2. The total of 16 segments including the free transfers. So if I book a ticket to London and start in MAD, LON-MAD segment counts as one segment even though the flight is not included? Sorry, I don't understand what you're saying here.

As ironmanjt said, it counts as a surface segment, and is one of the 16 allowed segments on the ticket.

Surface segments are not flight segments and so do not count towards the maximum number of flight segments allowed in a continent.
You are using three flight segments in Asia: HND-BKK-HKG and HND-HKG.
(And you have a surface segment HKG-HND? This could be a flown segment.)

I disagree with you on this point.
Yes, if the error message is still showing after you've chosen all your flights, then you cannot proceed.
But I have found that sometimes the message is displaying because the tool has chosen an airline that is allowed on a Global Explorer but not on a Oneworld Explorer (and the global explorer has a maximum mileage limit).
I was getting message while building my ex-Cairo DONE5 last month. The tool had chosen Fiji Airlines for my SYD-NAN and NAN-SYD flights. I changed to qantas, and the error disappeared. (Total mileage of my ticket is ~42,000)

You may well be right. I've never run into that problem, as my itins always work out fine with full OW members, most frequently QR, AA, JL, and CX.

You can definitely book itineraries over 34k BIS miles in the tool. That 'error' isn't relevant unless you're doing a DGLOB34, and if it's not pricing then it's something else. Could be segments in economy which it doesn't like sometimes, sometimes it has one segment departing before another arrives, I've even had it refuse to price BA segments when QR segments price just fine etc.

For the DONE3 I'm currently on, a bit under 50K BIS miles, all J/D flights, I tried to book it in the tool unsuccessfully, it errored out. Called the AA RTW desk, and they were able to book the exact same itinerary, no problem.

Wow....50,000 in just three continents?! I assume maxing out miles earning was one of your primary goals? You must be doing lots of longer flights within continents? Care to share the routing?

Yes, I have a few places I need/want to stop (BOS, BKK, and maybe DOH), otherwise it's maximizing miles.

NRT-DFW-BOS-DFW-ANC-DFW-SFO-DOH-DUB-DOH-MAD-DOH-ICN-CMB-BKK-CMB-NRT -- 54,114 BIS miles according to MileCalc.
