Coronavirus quarantine announced for Australia, with all arrivals required to self-isolate
Anyone arriving in Australia from overseas will to be forced to self-isolate for 14 days, the Prime Minister has announced.

Scott Morrison says the new measure will be in place from midnight (AEDT) as the Federal Government deals with the coronavirus outbreak.

Mr Morrison says international cruise ships will also be banned from docking in Australia for 30 days.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a travel ban on all non-residents and non-Australian citizens coming into Australia from 9:00pm AEDT on Friday 20 March.
New Zealand also announced the same restrictons.
Some non citizens/residents will get caught by this if they are in en-route. (~28 hours from now)

Forced coronavirus quarantine for all people returning to Australia

All passengers who arrive in Australia after midnight on Saturday will go into mandatory quarantine in hotels for a fortnight, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced.

"States and territories will be quarantining all arrivals through our airports in hotels and other accommodation facilities for the two weeks of their mandatory self-isolation before they are able to return to their home," he said.

If these pax are then going to across a state border that has a 14 days quarantine(e,g.NSW to Tas), That is 28 days self isolation in total, unless an exemption is granted.

It's actually more confusing than that. The Qld rules are very messy.

- You must quarantine for 14 days on entering Qld unless you are an exempt person.

- An exempt person includes, among others, any person who is normally resident in Qld.

- However the 14 day period quarantine applies to Qld residents if they have been outside Australia or have been in an area the CHO of Qld has designated an area where coronavirus is spreading in the community. These areas are published on the Qld Health website.

- These rules don't apply to communities on the state border (ie the Tweed/Gold Coast area) and FIFO workers.

So an exemption to an exemption. Very "yes minister"

The good news is that the curve is showing initial signs of flattening. The biggest challenge will be how and when to return to normal.

Australian Tourism Minister now saying no international travel until next year. For those with family or friends in Australia (or who just like visiting) looks like you won't be going there for a while.

Yikes. Cricket World Cup in late Oct-Nov. Have a long trip home planned to see Oz matches with friends & family all around the country.

CMO today said he couldn't envisage a scenario where large crowds will be able to gather until there is a vaccine. The examples he gave were nightclubs and music festivals. I don't think we're going to be watching sport in a crowd for a while yet.

Folks,

Where is a good place to follow news on the status of the border? I too have a trip booked for late October / early November. I'd say it seems unlikely at this point, but I really don't know where to look to get a feel for the current outlook on foreign travel to Australia.

Local Australian newspapers probably the best bet but they don’t run that many stories on it as there’s not a lot of news as there doesn’t seem to be any change to the rules foreseeable for quite some time. I think now the expectation is that we will be lucky to have a bubble to NZ up in that timeframe and no chance of tourists from the US this year.

Thanks - that status is quite understandable, but definitely a bummer as I absolutely love visiting Australia. Next year, I hope!

I have not seen an end date published. But any end date will get extended, as needed. Several AU Government ministers have stated the international border is not expected to be open this calendar year, other than perhaps for AU<--->NZ. IMHO travel restriction from rampant hot spots like USA, UK and others will be in place for many months (a year?), until infection & death rate reduces substantially. The death rate per million in USA/UK is about 85-150 times the rate in AU & NZ. We don't' want that here. Qantas have cancelled all international flight to the end of October (at least), which is an indication.
