Quote: I don't fly SWA. I stopped flying AA until they got rid of management that took pay increases from the govt handouts to airlines after 9/11. I don't shop at Walmart or Sam's Club. Target and Costco treat their employees better. And I try to drive cars from company's that are made in the USA and offer their workers decent benefits and pay. Right now I drive an Acura.

Granted, it's not easy to spend all your dollars consistently with your principles, but I sure as heck try.
Hmm...I didn't realize that Honda was supporting a pension and paying big 3 wages...you might wish to revisit your decision to support Honda over the big 3

Quote: Not for NW management, who gave themselves 2 million in raises about a week after they announced the cuts.
Unfortunately this fact isn't true....their salary's are cap'd by the federal law which provided a bailout after 9/11

Quote: About 38%, as opposed to about 1000% as is the case with NW management. And life is good. It just doesn't need to be obscenely good as opposed to those that work for me.

And maybe my math is off, but how does a $2 million dollar raise translate into a management pay cut?
Again check your facts....

BTW: So I'll assume you're not eligible to participate in your companies 401K or are limited in the amount of participation....or do you just not provide any retirement at all?

Quote: They don't have pensions because people like you support companies that have stripped them as a benefit. Don't know about you, personally, but these are often the same folks who would like to see SSI done away with (as long as they get theirs). Of course, how they are supposed to shift 15% of their pay to a 401K after a 25% wage cut is their problem, right?

The mentality these days is work 30 or 40 yrs, then go into a corner and die. This so Ma and Pa Walmart can kick back with $110 billion instead of $100 billion in their pocket books.
Unfortunately I believe this is the pot calling the kettle black...I my friend Drive vehicles from the brands of the big three which DO provide pensions (but shouldn't)....unlike the Honda you drive

BTW: How many retiree's do you see Honda supporting these days versus what the big three are supporting....I think you need to immediately go out and put your words into action by buying a few additional vehicles from the big 3's brands

Quote: Hey, I own a business too and I have a union in my factory. I love my union guys; you know why, they are rational and even tell the local rep to F off when he recommends something that will only help the union and not the business.

I agree that unions were necessary and they corrected a lot of wrongs. However, that was a LONG time ago. The problem with any organization formed to tackle a problem doesn't know what to do with themselves after they have FIXED the problem. Unions have fixed the injustices of the past decades ago. Now they are more interested in lining their pockets and keeping themselves afloat at the expense of American businesses and even some of th workers they represent. In my opinion, some unions are just as bad as the robber barons of old.

Today's unions are going to have to wake up because NWA will just go Chapter 11 and then bust the unions contract that way or de-authorize the union completely. Trust me, the union higher ups are testing the waters and the poor NWA mechanics are the bait and they are going to get slaughtered.

Ask your union workers how they'd feel about you asking them to take pay cuts to make up for the fact that you stupidly decided to sell a product for less than it costs to provide it, while giving yourself a huge raises. I think your workers would tell YOU to F off. And rightly so.

Quote: Choice is for each respective member . . .

.
"Choice is for each respective member"?

Not if you are a member of AMFA! As I understand it, NW's last contract offer was not submitted to the AMFA membership for a vote. Unfortunately, the union is looking to its own perceived best interest and not that of its senior membership. What is wrong with preserving the jobs of those with the greatest seniority? As a matter of fact, I believe that NW's final offer would have increased the number of mechanics who would be retained while eliminating the overpaid cleaners/custodians.

If I were a mechanic with 20 years on the job, I would sure have liked to vote on that offer, especially in consultation with my spouse and family.

Quote: If you are foolish enough to "compete" in your industry by providing a product at less than it costs to provide it (which is exactly what the moron executives throughout the industry have done), then you deserve those troubles. And if you're a real sleaze you will make your workers pay the price for your stupidity while giving yourself a big fat raise as NW management did.

That's is what is really going on here.
Wow....you might be finally getting it...NWA's costs are out of line, NWA is trying to get them inline but reducing ALL costs, MOST costs have been reduced SIGNIFICANTLY except for several unionized payroll costs, those unionized associates refuse to assist with reducing costs....management is left with 2 choices, give in and go out of business or fight for survival....it's a simple choice

BTW: Again I didn't see the unions begging NWA to reduce/bring their pay in line years ago when it could/should have happened, did you? And unfortunately that management team is now gone, so the current management team is trying their best to correct the issue

Quote: GO NWA!!

I'm booking all of my travel on NWA in support of the way they're handling this situation. As you can already see ALPA knows better than to get into this - pilots are the brightest of the bunch.
As a licensed, current pilot myself (just not with the first class medical like yours) I have to smirk and agree that indeed, the pilots are the brightest of the bunch!

NWA: Action approved as requested, continue inbound!

Of course some of us are sub-par, you know, the (business) elevator doesn't go all the way to the top floor, one card short of a full deck, etc.

That's why we have Enlightened Ones to show us the True Way.

Quote: And bye bye to my NW status, because I won't be able to make it this year. I won't cross a picket line. And frankly, shame on the NW FA's and pilots for doing so.
Shame on the mechanics for crossing the pilots picket like in 1989.. Shame on the mechanics union for calling the ramp workers luggage loser and knuckle draggers afew years ago..

They are reaping what they sowed here.

Quote: I'm not really interested in helping US robber barrons of this era. I won't buy a car that is not made by US workers, but I have no loyalty to US robber barron corporations, so don't really care where the profits go so long as the employees get decent treatment. I also try to stay in union hotels when I travel. Not always possible, but I try.
But you DID, there are parts in your honda that were made by non-US employees....and even those US employees were paid less than their counterparts at the big three....I fail to see how you can justify driving a honda but supporting the unions at NWA, sounds like a flip-flop to me and I'm sure you're ok with it because it let's you sleep at night...
