We could help out by giving an extra $50-100 for each ticket we buy....anyone game?

Well said.

Certainly would not be an easy vote, but the choice for the 50% who would lose their jobs is between (i) no job, but severance package (if they agreed to the contract), or (ii) no job, and no severance (which is what they have bought themselves now by going on strike.

Things that make you go, hmm...

Having delivered a NW mechanic's toolbox and all of their equipment to the hangar, and seeing everyone else's individual toolboxes there I'm sure those were actually mechanic's tools and not the airline's. They're removing them to prevent damage by replacement people or others that might be there since that's a very significant investment the mechanic has put into having the tools to do their job.

With the pilots and FAs crossing the picket line, it looks like AMFA is out there on their own.

Advantage: Northwest

They voted no according to initial news reports.

I think this thread is getting way too emotional. I feel for the mechanics, at the same time I feel that NWA has to change to survive. I hope that after both sides beat their chests, they will come to an equitable agreement.

All mechanics I've seen have always been professional. They are certainly not apes, and whether they are on strike or not, should be treated fairly.

Big ^ to FAs. Cooler heads prevail; we all are better off in the long run. Thanks.

Ah... I thought that might be the case. I am too used to the mindset that all work materials must be owned by the company. Is it common for mechanics of all trades to own their own Snap-On tools, etc? Must be.

P.S. I will edit my early post to omit the reference to the toolbox article...

yeah I agree... I mean they need to do what they feel they need to do.

Sadly, I think this is ill timed in many regards.

I think anyone interested in the question you pose should start with the facts... that NW operates and manages 1600 departures a day (according to the labor dispute section of (http://nwa.com). Given this, how many mechanics are needed to keep this program going? 1500... sounds like a good number to me. That's almost 1 mechanic per daily departure. Oh, add in about 300+ management who are going back to backfill and also those NW Mechanics who do not honor the picket line... hmm...

Alan,

They can hire thousands of workers and the rest of the people don't have to be on strike to cause a disruption. If the crews decide to write everything up in sympathy there is no way the replacement workers are ever going to be able to address all of those write ups and keep the operation running close to normal. We'll just have to see in the coming morning departure hours.
