LAX/DTW NW338 departing after strike has begun

I am on NW338 which is still departing (10:30 PDT scheduled departure) and the FA's are working the flight,

Does anyone know if the PFAA voted to authorize a sympathy strike?

i believe all the mechanics have been locked out as it seems they were all escorted off the property and credentials confiscated at the end of their shifts.

I think you are totally off. As a mechanic, how could you possibly support NWA's plan? Here it goes: you vote for the contract NWA offered and you, and or, a large percentage of your friends, co-workers, and collegaues will no longer have a job. I am worried about pending flights, but let's at least try to understand where the mechs are coming from. They are being asked to drastically alter their lifestyle, their compensation, their quality of life. Maybe we don't have to fully understand what they are doing, but I do believe we owe them some compassion. This is not an easy issue for anyone involved.

Simple: These union contracts were negotiated during a much different time in the industry. They are way out of line now and the companies cannot possibly pay them and still compete. How can you not support the company's position given the mechanic's inability to realize that the damn well is dry and they have to sacrifice to maintain anything?

If they did, I'm sure it'd be posted in the Northwest Newsstand.

OH GROW UP BOYZ AND GIRLZ!!!

The situation is bad and really there is no good solution. Can you blame either side?? I can't....realities of life have flinally caught up with both sides and is't sad, unfortunate but unavoidable.

We could help out by giving an extra $50-100 for each ticket we buy....anyone game?

I am unsure of how to respond to your post, convey what I want to convey effectively, and yet still respect your position and the flyertalk TOS. I think that smaller groups of implementors are often times more effective than a larger whole. 9000, 4500, 2000... I think anyone interested in the question you pose should start with the facts... that NW operates and manages 1600 departures a day (according to the labor dispute section of (http://nwa.com). Given this, how many mechanics are needed to keep this program going? 1500... sounds like a good number to me. That's almost 1 mechanic per daily departure. Oh, add in about 300+ management who are going back to backfill and also those NW Mechanics who do not honor the picket line... hmm...

PFAA (Flight Attendants) will cross pickets too

CBS is reporting that flight attendants will cross pickets too. Your own union members too (PFAA) have voted to cross pickets. See story at:

Gargoyle, I don't feel any safer on a NW jet maintained by a (previously) unionized mechanic than I do on a DL jet maintained by a non-unionized mechanic. Do you? A lot of the replacement mechanics are coming from the ranks of furloughed DL and UA mechanics.

I've missed the biggest one? Wow, you really do learn something new on FT every day! Thanks.

NWsilverflyer Aug 19, 2005 11:16 pm

I was talking about the individual mechanic's frame of mind. They would not vote to diminsih the amount of NW mechanic jobs, would they? Just doesn't make sense. I do understand the basic fundamentals of the situation. The company is losing money and wage concessions are needed. No bones about it. Just saying that I don't see how the individual mechanic can vote for a proposal that is self-defeating.
