Do the miles flown on award tickets count towards lifetime status?

(I realize they don't count towards further award generation)

No. You don't earn miles of any kind when you fly on an award ticket (unless you're really lucky and if you're really lucky, someone made a mistake).

Unless things have changed, the only way to earn mileage on award tickets (other than a mistake), is when you are bumped and the status of the ticket changes. A status change is rare when they keep you on the same airline, but changing to a different airline used to score me some mileage and earnings like a normally paid ticket. It's been a few years and the computer software may catch the same airline changes. e.g. when the agent doesn't remember the code for first award and enters F, I don't collect miles anymore like I used to.

YMMV,

I used my UA miles to upgrade a LH flight cost 30k miles then
I got credit on UA for the flight.
I also got a class of service bonus on UA! so I got back about 3-4000 miles I think.
I paid out only 26k if I am right for a long TATL flight

Quite a while ago, I used an award to SIN using US miles on LH
My LH flight was late and I gt rerouted via DXB then EK
I got mileage credit for F on LH to DXB on my US acct!
Lastly, I got an offer to upgrade me from SP to GP for free.
I suspect it was the single flight on LH in F that triggered that free upgrade.
I had no flown miles on any *A that was credited to US except for that flight

One can make AA lifetime status in a fairly short period of time, if you really make the effort.

Yes, the SPG 35% bonuses really help. For 60k spg you got 102 k AA. The only reason to do it is to get free OW lounge access. But then you will use it only when you FLY OW anyway! It is a good backup plan.
Between DL rollover and AA lifetime, you can cover the smaller 2 alliances.
You can then focus on *A with Asiana with 40k Elite miles in 2 years and get 2 more years of lounge access here free.

Air Canada is (somewhat quietly) rolling out a lifetime status program, based on status miles on AC/Jazz since 1988.

The details are here:

There are 3 levels to the program. 1, 2 and 3 million miles flown on AC/Jazz since the start of the status program.
1MM = Lifetime Elite status for member + exclusive benefits/gift unique to this status level
2MM = Lifetime Elite status for member + Lifetime Elite status for a nominated partner + exclusive benefits/gifts unique to this status level
3MM = Lifetime Super Elite status for member + Lifetime Elite status for a nominated partner + exclusive benefits/gifts unique to this status level

Those who have qualified will be receiving their individual personalized packages in the coming weeks. In the coming months we have additional functionality rolling out to facilitate the ability to track your progress toward achieving status in these new programs.

Thanks again for your feedback and continued loyalty.

i wish airlines in india had lifetime status....i would have probably earned it on a couple, maybe all 3 of the major airlines by now....i see myself traveling quite a bit for the next couple of years but would want to slow down after that....would be nice to still have status....

For purpose of the recap, I am only listing airlines that are in one of the alliances, and whereby life status is f or top tier.

ONE
* AA: After having received 2M "program-to-date" miles (from all sources, including not airlines) over any period of time (even over 20 years), you become AA Platinum (and top tier for One World) for life.
* QF: After having received 14K "status credits" (on airlines only, all OneWorld partners) over any period of time (even over 20 years), you become QF Gold (and top tier for One World) for life.

STAR
* UA: After having received 1M "program-to-date" miles (but only on UA flights, not even other Star members), you become UA Premier Executive (and top tier with Star) for life. [btw, what is Premier Executive 1K then ? that is even more top ?]
* OZ: After having received 1M "program-to-date" miles (from all airline partners), you become OZ Platinum (and top tier with Star) for life.
* LH: Possible but only if aged over 65.

SKY
* AF/KL: After ten consecutive years as Platinum Elite (or former equivalent), you become Platinum Elite (and top tier for Sky Team) for life.
* KE: possible but not clear, someone can complete ?
* DL: possible but not clear, someone can complete ?
* CO: possible but not clear, someone can complete ?

I think the perfect way to correct this, would be for someone to copy and paste this in further posts, with relevant corrections.

KE gives lifetime SkyTeam Elite Plus status, which is the top tier in SkyTeam, for half a million or 500K miles earned on all SkyTeam carriers.

KL/AF FB:

Is the lifetime also for FB Goldmembers after 10-years for platinum only?

I just wonder in going for gold at FB, and hop AMS-LPL-AMS which has good fares mostly to fill up the last flights to get gold, or go for Oneworld (AA). Too bad I choose AY before where I got stuck with 150.000 miles (cant transfer miles to AA), but AY isnt giving you lifetime status

True enough, but they are:

Gold at 1 million
Platinum at 2 million
and that is it! No EXP. But all miles count, unlike most carriers. That is how one can get the status so quickly. I made many of my first two million buying jet fuel at the FBO's AA then owned.

These days Delta has AirElite that can get fast accumulation and status for buying charter flights. Lufthansa has a similar program that operates only in Europe.

So all three alliances give you some unusual, if expensive, ways to get lifetime status quickly.

Unfortunately: yes. It has to be 10 years in-a-row, so when you are 8 years Plat, then move to Gold, then back to Plat, the counting starts again.

(Bolding is a correction in the quote made by me)
