Lifetime Elite on others
The most known lifetime elite status carriers I have seen are UA, DL, AA and KL.
I have only seen ONE case where someone was a lifetime Plat with CO. I met this guy in a MEX-IAH flight and he told me he had stuck with CO through both bankruptcies and one day he received a OnePass Plat card that read LIFETIME in the expiration date.
Anybody know if CO has any sort of rule for lifetime elite status?

Sticking with CO through bankruptcy

Your MEX-IAH buddy is right - you had to be a total CO fan when all that was happening. The top management was in total shambles - routes and flights evaporated and reappeared without apparent reason. But all the ordinary staff were incredible - they stuck at it as though nothing had happened - that's what made the airline last. Dedication like you never see from any CEO these days. I have not been using CO much of late but let me say that to this day there is something very special about CO that other airlines don't have.

KE and OZ also have lifetime status, and by far both of their programs are rather attractive:
1. Miles never expire
2. Achieve lifetime status with 1,000,000 miles
2a. ...in which KE counts miles from KE and Skyteam partners
2b. ...in which OZ counts miles from OZ and Star Alliance partners
3. 1,000,000 miles earn you
3a. KE - Skyteam Elite Plus benefits for life
3b. OZ - Star Gold for life
On the downside, their mileage redemptions are rather poor out of North America, so YMMV.

Seems like KE or OZ are switching to a 5yrs validity for their miles.
EDIT: only KE is from next year.

Which benefit ?
When we say we want status, I think we need to make it clear which benefit we want from the status.
Some wants it because they just want name, or
Bonus Mileage 100%
Priority Baggage
Extra Baggage allowance
Priority waitlisting
Priority Boading
Priotity Check-in
Lounge Access
One of my friends loves to be called and said, "Mr.XXXX, Thank you very much for using Japan Airlines so often." by cabin atendant in front of others even he sits in economy class. LOL
Let me tell you the case of Japan Air Line.
If you want Priority Check-in and 25% Bonus, you just need JAL-VISA gold card.
If you need more just like listed above, become JMB(Japan Mileage Bank) Sapphire(50.000miles or 50times) equal to One World Sappire and join JAL Global Club with JAL-CARD. Once you become JGC member and as long as you keep JALcredit card, your menbership is life time. If you don't join JGC, you need to fly a lot for next year again just like other FF program.
This year, I flew more than 50,000miles and got this status and JGC membership which is almost lifetime.
If you use only JAL, JGC membership is enogh and no need to fly with JAL to keep its membership. But if you want to keep One World Sappinre, you need to fly at least 20000miles, and four times with JAL every year. I mean JGC member is same as Sapphire in JAL, but actualy is Ruby in other airlines of One World Aliance.
I think it's not real LIFE TIME STATUS, but it is almost the same.
All Nippon Airways has simlar system. ANA is one of Star Aliance. (You can keep Gold status for lifetime)
Regards

I don't know if foreign residents other than Japan can get JAL-VISA GOLD CARD. Please check JAL home page and you can jump to JAL-CARD.

Change "Extra Baggage allowance" to just plain "Baggage allowance", especially since you're talking about OW. In case you haven't heard, OW member AA in the US is adding a $15 fee on the first bag checked on "domestic"-only economy-class itineraries ("domestic" in quotes because it includes a bit more than US, such as Canada and Puerto Rico), but it's waived for AA and OW status holders:

Oh. sorry. You are talking about One World. Yes that's right. Extra Baggage allowance is only for JAL Sapphire, not for One World Sapphire.
I am afraid that there must be some more differences between JAL Sapphire and One World Sapphire.
Please check this if you are interested in JAL case.
