Does anybody just fly for the sake of flying?

Iflysouthwest, I'm a huge proponent of the daytrip idea but I prefer to do a little something in the city I go to. This year I took day trips to Boston, Washington D.C., Wichita, KS and San Diego. Usually I grab lunch and do some sightseeing.

The rest of us have to just do it for leisure I guess??
A job would be a nice way to fund my flying past-time!

I fly because I enjoy being felt up by those cute TSAers. I love it when they say, "I'm going to touch you now."
I'm thinking of buying metal underwear to drive them crazy. I need a wanding now!

We flew down to Reno and back yesterday. As it turned out a full 60% of all first class passengers were taking segments runs.

One other passenger actually had business in Reno, but selected this flight because of the great Web Special.
So, if there were no status programs to maintain, would first class have been almost empty?
There were, BTW, two empty seats.

I have never done a "pure" mileage run where the sole purpose was just to fly and not actually do anything at the destination.
I have taken several trips (usually in December or February) that were spurred on by the mileage programs. The goal was to qualify for a status, earn some big bonus, or even take advantage of one last trip at a status I was about to lose. I've done a couple of $350 R/T's to Europe and $150 R/T's to the West Coast like this - but I always spent whatever time I could at the destination (even if only 1 night in the case of the West Coast).

Before 9-11 I occasionally flew just to go somewhere in a plane. Now its only for business or ff miles or both.
I'm sorry I missed the Concord. Near the end I was thinking I should have popped for the miles or the $ and flown high enough to see the curvature of the earth. That would have been a flight just to fly not caring about the miles or the destination.

There is a similar topic in MR section called "MR or Vacation". It has some interesting answers.
Unless it's the concorde, I feel like I'm only wasting time sitting on a plane or in an airport. It's mind-numbingly borrrring to me.
Similarly, if I'm not somewhere for at least 1 week, I think it's a waste of money, time, and chance. The reason why I persuse FT is for good ticket deals, not for mileage runs. I like to go to new places and experience those place. Get a feel for how others live, and do the things they do for fun. You simply can't do that in less than 1 week, and certinly not on a day trip. To me, there's nothing worse than a trip composed of a hasty tourist-trap tour.

One time I flew AirTran just to see an airshow (no useful mileage accumulation).
Another time I flew to New Orleans on the way to Ohio (also no mileage accumulation). Coulda flown direct, but I just love flying.

Re: DTW airport. The WorldPerks lounge is almost worth the trip itself (if going to visit the airport). If you can get a pass for Northwest or CO for a visit, they have the best selection of snacks, drinks that I have seen. The time I was there, they had Atkins chocolates as one choice.
Otherwise DTW has some good restaurants. I like the Mediterranean one towards the higher gates in A concorse.

I'm planning to do my first mileage run this Tuesday on Southwest (Nov 18). DTW-MDW-CMH-MDW-IND-MDW-DTW. 18 RR credits.
I chose CMH and IND because I've never flown to/from either airport before (and because they were both $39 from MDW). I won't have enough time to see the cities themselves, but I'll bring a good book and explore the terminals.
Any suggestions on what to see or where to eat in CMH and IND?
