Wow. If I only took trips when I had a week of free time, I'd be a lot poorer for it (well, actually, I'd have a lot more money, but... )
For those of us with limited vacation time, a day or two spent somewhere certainly has worth. One can always go back and do a more in-depth trip at a later date. But since I have very few days of vacation in my work, I love being able to take the short trips. They're still not necessarily mileage runs, but I wouldn't call them a waste.

I'm a Long Haul truck driver and have no place to park my truck at the house. It's not uncommon however for drivers to take their rigs home, but there are a few whose trucks would be towed away at the drivers expense if they tried to park a class 8 tractor in their driveway. This "unfortunately" applies to me, so the cost of a "Y" ticket on WN is much cheaper than the cost of a "P" ticket at the courthouse. It works out good for me bbecause I enjoy flying. I will normally park in Ontario or Phoenix at our terminal locations, and catch a flight to the house on WN once every 3-4 weeks. Life is good.

I know a driver who lives in Maui, and commutes on HA to LAX and back every 4 weeks and drives a truck. He's been doing this for more than 15 years.

Erik.

I often fly to cities for brunch or Happy Hour, etc. Kind of like a mileage run and a mini trip. DCA is great for this because the metro is inside the airport very close to the gates.

Another one for me...

One time I wanted to visit PHX without a Saturday night stay. CO was having a sale from DFW, AUS and SAT (though not IAH, of course) to PHX with a Saturday night stay.

I bought two open-jaw Saturday night stay tickets and arranged them so that I would not return to my point of origin or co-terminal thereof before Saturday night, with the second PHX visit scheduled to be very short. I flew all the segments (otherwise it turns into back-to-back via throwaway tickets).

So, in essence, I flew to PHX just to eat lunch in the airport.
