This is something I have always wanted to do. After reading peoples trip reports here, at jetphotos.net and airliners.net while they just take a "Daytrip"

Well, it turns out that I had to cancel a reservation on Southwest and I ended up rebooking it, using the credit from the previous trip. Probelm...the new flights are more expensive then the previous flights so... I just booked a "daytrip" with all my credit (plus $75.00, taxes...extra money...etc) and using the "shortcut" thing on www.iflysouthwest.com, I booked a daytrip from MDW-DTW

November 15 MDW-DTW ft. 1335 d:8:40am a 10:35am

November 15 DTW-MDW ft. 1823 D:12:35pm a 12:40pm

Not that long, but something I have always wanted to do. Anybody know of anything to do at DTW?

Welcome to Flyertalk I Fly Southwest!. If you haven't yet, you should check out the mileage run section of flyertalk as well as the Trip report section. Both are chock full of folks who fly just for the sake of flying (well, earning miles and status as well). I've flown as far as Singapore with only a few hours before returning back home and will do it again in a heartbeat. Enjoy your flight and enjoy Flyertalk .

I don't know what terminal SWA uses at DTW, but make sure to go see Northwests World Gateway terminal. Really modern and cool with an indoor shuttle train that looks like a model train running along the interior near the roof-line.

If you fly Southwest on the 18th of November or December, you can get triple credit and make it a mileage run. See the Southwest forum.

I was about to suggest that idea.. however, NW and SWA are not in the same terminal. You'll have to take a shuttle to get to the "WorldGateway". Good luck!

I love the one-day trips, my farthest yet is PHX-DTW-BOS-MSP-PHX, and even funkier, three of four legs were on the same jet.

A huge part of trips is the flights for me, I'm an airliner junkie.

No, I usually fly when I have to for business. I do fly on award tickets when personal issues arise like family trips. I have never taken a trip for the sole purpose of gaining miles/segments.

People fly all the time for miles, not really for daytrips. Southwest isn't really the best airline to do that on if you're planning on making a hobby of it. SW's rewards expire after a year, so they aren't that useful sometimes & they don't go internationally. They do have cheap fares and a friend of mine gets bumped almost everytime he flies the BWI-MDW route on the way back.

I've only done about 2 real mileage runs, and both them have landed me status miles and bump vouchers and I'm planning on doing an international MR sometime next Spring. It'll be a four day trip, but only 1 night spent in a hotel, the rest will be in airplanes...so yes, to answer you questions, some people do fly just to fly (and earn the EQMs & bonus miles!)

Sounds like you don't have enough time to make it into the city, but next time you do have more time in Detroit be sure to visit Greektown. There are lots of great restaurants there (Fishbones is my personal favorite). Most Detroiters, I think, would also recommend a visit to Greektown on any Detroit trip.

Flying for the sake of Miles and status sounds reasonable. Flying to meet new people on the plane is also reasonable. Flying for the sake of flying is a bit too much for me.

I've done it twice, mostly to experience to new aircraft and/or airlines...as an aviation buff variety is very important to me and otherwise I dont often get the chance to experience new (to me) airlines/aircraft...

PHL-PIT-PHL...3/16/02...US A330 (Envoy class...that flight was operated by N674UW, hence my FT handle),2 hour layover in PIT, and returned on an FL 717 back in the days when FL flew PIT-PHL...total fare $84...I had never flown the US A330 before nor had I flown on AirTran previously

FLL-JFK-FLL...6/24/03...headed up on a Song 757, had a 5 hour layover, saw Concorde for the first and last time (a secondary motive to go on this trip), and came back on a jetBlue A320...both firsts in terms of airlines for me...total fare $160

Both trips were great ways to increase the variety of airlines that I have flown, which otherwise would have been minimal...I like variety and new experiences...both trips were worth every penny...

I fly WN at least once a month from DAL-New Orleans just to have brunch

My wife uses most of my miles for award travel. I hate to be on a plane and not receive miles.

So. . .I don't fly for flyings sake--I fly for the miles.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies, I am really looking forward to this trip and changed the return flight from the 12:35 departure to the 2:15 departure to allow myself more time. No charge for changing!
