My two cents:
I just got off the phone with Julie at Goldpoints and bizzare as it sounds they are going to give those in the know 450 points per dollar till 12/31 (at least that's the story de jour). Thanks to the posters who found out how to extend subscriptions and that it was still alive. I'm going back in to renew a bunch. Some really good mags and some future great trips. I'm already planning a trip to finally see the pyramids and the transit of Venus in 2006. Plus I got my best friend a nice Three Kings Day present form Hickory Farms!

For anyone in this predicament, I ordered and then went on holiday, only to come back to the message that I needed to fax in the order confirmation.

Shari from valuemags confirmed to me that anyone who ordered prior to the cut off date would receive points at the 450 per dollar level even if they have not yet received your confirmation fax.

What I'm NOT worried about:

Given the response from Valuemags and those from Goldpoints, I see no reason to doubt that the orders under the 450 point promotion will be honored. And, if not, I have clear documentation, and this thread itself, which would provide adequate grounds for a dispute/chargeback. The only other legitimate response would be a full refund, which I don't see as a problem, even with the cancellation contract, provided that the promotion is not honored.

My dealings with Valuemags (calls, fax, email) have been excellent. Highly unlikely that this post is a hoax. It is accurate and informative. My surmise is that they are trying to hard to run a legitimate business and will deal in good faith to uphold the promotion and earn the respect of the f.flyer community.

What I am worried about:

Radisson Gold Rewards, not VM, changes the redemption policy, as suggested above. For example, redemption amount/frequency, etc. This would be an inherent, backhanded devaluation. Let's keep an eye out for this. Unlike LatinPass, however, Radisson/Carlson has the financial wherewithal and integrity (hopefully) to make good on their promotion per the current program rules.

Just spoke with Ricardo at GoldPoints. The 450 points/dollar ended when the offer was withdrawn from the website. He claimed valuemags were the ones who dropped the point value. Any new orders with valuemags will be processed at 150 points/dollar. Orders placed previously (before the offer was changed) will receive the 450 points/dollar.

Until I see that the offer is still 450/dollar in writing, I'm steering clear.

Goldpoints may find that in the end it would have created less hassle and work for them if they had just left the end date alone. Valuemags, and also other reps of goldpoints, have said that it was goldpoints who pulled this thing early.

MileKing: you spoke with ricardo. i spoke with him too previously. the ricardo i spoke with is the supervisor of the call centre. was that the same one? (he was really nice, so i sent a letter and a CSR said there was only one ricardo)

if he said it's a no-go, i'd take his word.

Does anybody have a theory as to the discrepancies from different Goldpoints reps?

When I spoke with them today around 1 pm Pacific, they (the CSR I spoke to and his supervisor who was right next to him) were definite that the triple points promo is still on. I asked not once, not twice but several times. The route they suggested if the correct points are not credited, i.e. fax to them, is exactly the same as in an email from Goldpoints in response to my specific query, and echoes what other posters received in email and phone correspondence. So it's not like somebody just said that the promo is still on nonchalantly. They were categorical. Somebody even posted here that there was a memo from management stating so. So why the discrepancy?

From the Valuemags website this evening...

"ValueMags Satisfaction Guarantee

1. Money-Back Guarantee: It is our goal that you are 100% satisfied
with your purchase from ValueMags.com. If you are not completely satisfied
or you change your mind, simply cancel within 30 days of placing your order and
you will receive a full refund. No refunds will be provided after 30 days of
placing your order.

2. Best Price Guarantee: ValueMags will match or beat any authorized
price. Simply send us a link to the price, a copy of an advertisement or
some proof and we'll give you the best price!

3. Prompt Customer Service: We promise to answer any customer
service requests within 24 hours.

Send questions, comments and price challenges to
[email protected] or call 800-684-5373."

How then, does Valuemags think that it can go back AFTER THE FACT and make people sign an agreement with a 50% "re-stocking" fee?
First, clearly they don't plan to RESTOCK the magazine, and if you've cancelled within 30 days, you have most likely not yet even gotten any magazines.
Second, they have ALREADY charged my credit card, so the deal is done. No changing the terms at this point.

Please be clear: I am NOT suggesting nor would I ever cancel the subscriptions following the posting of the points...however....Valuemags doesn't have a leg to stand on here, and whoever is giving them legal advice is asleep at the wheel.

Well, just to muddy the waters further :

I sent an email yesterday to Goldpoints, roughly half an hour after the promotion was pulled from their website, saying that I was disappointed that they had ended it early, hoped they would reconsider, etc, etc. I got a reply from them today via email. It's the same others have received; I'm trying to figure out how this could not be considered written notification that the promotion does in fact still run until 12/31/01. Anyway, here's the text :

Thank you for contacting Gold Points Rewards. The triple points
promotion for ValuMags.com does go until 12/31/01. If you do place an
order with Valuemags.com, please fax in your receipts to us at
1-763-212-5747 with your name and account number on the fax. Please
also note on your fax that you may have only received 150 points per
dollar spent and not the 450 points per dollar.

Once we receive your fax, we will research your order.

Thank you for your patience.

Based on this reply, even if valumag says the 450 promo has ended, Goldpoints will apparantly honor the promo until 12/31. But it could be a hassle collecting so I'm going to sit tight.

Instead of enouph miles for a trip to Mars, I'll have to settle for the Moon.
