Should I Combine Credit Cards?

My husband and I each have an AAdvantage credit card and earn about 40,000+ miles per year on each card. I never considered this, but should we get rid of one and earn miles on only one card?

There is no reason for us to each have one. Does this make sense to have two? If we both earned toward one, we would be able to reach a different status, right? Or would it only entitle ONE of use (i.e. platinum member benefits, such as airprt lounges, etc) the benefits?

Thanks............

Unless you are GLD, PLT or EXP, the miles you earn are limited, so be sure you're within the limits before dropping one. (Not sure if this is the right forum for this question. You should find a plethora of info in the AA and Visa forums.)

The miles you earn on the credit cards do not count towards annual status (Gold, Platinum, Executive Platinum). They do count toward lifetime status (Gold for 1 million miles, Platinum for 2 million miles). By cutting back to one card, you would consolidate all miles in one account and save the annual fee on the second card.

Instead of moving this to the AA forum, since its a general credit card discussion & can apply to any loyalty credit card, I'm going to move this to the MilesBuzz forum.

Thanks,

Unless you are GLD, PLT, or EXP, you are limited to earning 60,000 miles/year per Advantage Account. In addition, you can not reach yearly elite levels with a credit card (no matter how much you charge). The only time when a credit card can help you with elite status is with lifetime status (where everything counts)

The principle here is correct, but IIRC "higher-class" cards (named for more precious metals, higher annual fees) have a limit of 100,000 miles/year for non-elites.
