There is no reason for us to each have one. Does this make sense to have two? If we both earned toward one, we would be able to reach a different status, right? Or would it only entitle ONE of use (i.e. platinum member benefits, such as airprt lounges, etc) the benefits?

The miles you earn on the credit cards do not count towards annual status (Gold, Platinum, Executive Platinum). They do count toward lifetime status (Gold for 1 million miles, Platinum for 2 million miles). By cutting back to one card, you would consolidate all miles in one account and save the annual fee on the second card.
