What constitues a hotel "stay"?

What constitues a hotel "stay"?
Instead of staying 4 days at a hotel...can I make it into 4 one day "stays"??
This makes it possible to get more points.
I apologize if this seems like a stupid question but I am new to the mileage game.

Yes, but you would have to check out and re check-in at ANOTHER hotel. Checking out & in of the same hotel does not work. This is sometimes done to go up a level in the hotels loyalty program. A good example of this would be a 4 night stay in Manhattan. You could get 4 stays by just moving back & forth from the Sheraton NY to the Sheraton Manhattan, which is right across the street !!! (its quite an hassle, though)

Actually, you can stay at the same hotel and get the credit (sometimes, every chain is different) Especially if the rate changes between the nights (weekend veres weekday)

I am unaware of any major hotel programs that allow you to check in one night, then check out and back in the next night AND get credit for two stays. This will not happen at Hyatt.
Before you give cigatman a cigar, lets here what chain does this from him/her.
As previously stated, switching between two or more hotels will work and is a very useful tool if you are close, but no ...will...no cigar.

Actually, I am not sure that you will get stay credits if it is in the same city. I went through this with Hilton. For instance, mutiple stays in Washington DC would count as 1 stay (but you get all points, just not multiple double dipping). That is why I try to move around between hotel chains like Hilton and Hyatt.

Hilton credits you with multiple stays for a move within one city. At least they did for a stay at the Heathrow Hilton followed by the Kensington National Hilton. (Even though those are both considered London, they are so far apart that it can make sense to move from one to the other for travel-related reasons. If they were across the street it might be different.)

My experience with Hilton differs from
yours. I routinely move from Hilton to
Hilton within a metro area and each counts
as a separate stay.
At properties that charge an early checkout
fee, I will make multiple/separate one (1)
day reservations at the same property ...
I think the correct answer to the original
question is: "it depends"

Starwood does not count back to back stays in the same city as multiple stays.
Now, it may slip through the computer, but offically doing one night at the sheraton ny/ one at the sheraton manhattan, one back at the ny and the 4th night at the manhattan would get you one stay.
If stays will get you the status, you might want to switch brands each night.
I did that once in st louis, radisson had a 2000 miles per stay. I did 3 nights at the radisson and 2 at the holiday Inn around the corner. Checking in and out each night.

I agree that holiday SAYS that... I recieve credit there all the time. AND I got stays for two rooms several times on the same night (paid for one of my employees room). Holiday is so messsed up...who knows. Also have recieved Starwood stay credit when PAYING DIFFERENT RATES. Since the web site is crazy (i know boomer 
) Once friday was $89, sat and sun was $99, mon and tues were $109. If I booked as a group got $109 each night. If I split it Got the cheaper rates. Go figure...

Good for you cigarman. You been the rules, but that does not make good advice.
Hyatt will post each night stay IF you change properties each night, even within the same city, ie Chicago, Houston, etc. I have done this for years. Some years it was the only way I kept my Diamond status. It you stay in the same property two or more nights in a row that is one stay!
