Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

You could no-show, as the poster above suggests....But I think the courteous thing to do would be to call, or go to the transfer desks and tell them that you can't take the last flight because you need to be in Hong Kong. It's not the hugest deal, but it will be a nice thing to save the gate agents the added trouble/stress of trying to track you down while doing everything else they need to do to get the flight out on time.

Update for my fellow FTers. I was able to successfully change my ticket.
This is for fare basis AAARRVN8 which booked into A/J. I booked via Priceline. Calling them was useless as they always quoted a really high $ figure, even for flights with clear A/J availability. I flew the outbound already, so that opened up calling CX directly for changes instead. Preparing for the worst, I just called, and the change was actually super easy - probably thanks to advanced research into the issue. I made sure to feed the agent flights with definite A/J availability. Note, I was only able to get that by forcing a stopover in HKG, which I am fine with.
What I did was search using ITA matrix like this:
I was looking for late 2019 or early 2020. Late 2019 was basically non-existent. I was worried about booking into 2020, since some reported that ticket validity is one year from purchase, although my receipt didn't mention that, just one year from travel commencement and also something about only until Jan 31 2020. I decided to try a date in early January first, and that worked. Only owed the $100 change fee per passenger, plus a minor tax for HKG of about ~$10-20 (too excited at that point to care

So basically, if you want to reschedule just the return flight, you may have luck in early 2020. There were also some dates from now until October open, but Nov/Dec were completely unavailable.

Assuming you have flown the outbound, have you tried to just change the return at the CX site (versus looking for open dates)?

- Available on OTA and ITA, but not on CX website = reps cannot see A space.

- Searched some dates for HAN-USA-HAN on CX website, found A space. This is Vietnam POS, coming straight from CX website.
- CX phone representatives cannot see A space for changes, on those dates, despite multiple HUCA.
- CX Twitter advises: "seat availability on a new ticket and for rebooking are different."
- Ticket was booked on CX website, not OTA.

Although I booked an A fare, every time I try to change via the website, it shows me only J options. This is even for dates where CX phone reps tell me there is A space I can change to.

It could be the dates you want are not available for this ticket.

I didn't even have to make an argument about A being available. Just asked if I could waitlist for A (if such waitlisting even exists), and they said it was available.

Update: was able to make the change via Twitter. I guess HUCA worked this time, even over Twitter where there is a chat log showing previous attempts.

For the future... Online at the CX site you do not need to look for A fares. Just select change flights. Pick the days you want. If it is available it will say no additional fare and you pay the $100 change fee. Very easy to do.

Has anyone gotten sick/changed plans weeks AHEAD of time for the last segment (HKG-Vietnam) and booked a separate CX ticket?

Booked, checked-in and fly JFK-HKG
Booked and checked-in HKG-HAN/DAD - am departure
Booked HKG-XXX on CX as well - am departure
Fly JFK-HKG, then don't fly last segment (HKG-HAN/DAD)
Instead, fly the separate HKG-XXX

Flew our outbound SGN-HKG-SEA a couple of weeks ago and the miles finally showed up in my kids AS accounts. Wow, it will be 33,500 award miles once we fly back later this week. With all the 5k award sales that AS has for west coast routes, that's 3 roundtrip flights to Montana or SoCal for each kid, which is easily $500-600 in value to us. What a deal ;-)

Did you have a stopover in HKG? CX website does not allow cancellation of booking, or cancellation of check-in, after boarding passes have been issued. So the only option for one seeking to skip the last leg, without stopover, seems to be a no-show.
