Update: was able to make the change via Twitter. I guess HUCA worked this time, even over Twitter where there is a chat log showing previous attempts.
I didn't even have to make an argument about A being available. Just asked if I could waitlist for A (if such waitlisting even exists), and they said it was available.

For the future... Online at the CX site you do not need to look for A fares. Just select change flights. Pick the days you want. If it is available it will say no additional fare and you pay the $100 change fee. Very easy to do.
