Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I have upcoming flight by end of April on A from IAD to Hanoi via LAX. I called them trying to change the flight to Feb 2021 but said it's only can change up to December 10, 2020. At the same time, they are downgrading to J flight directly from IAD to HKG. I politely said no since I have a month to sleep on the decision.

No mention of the option to rebook. (This flight was in May... JFK to HKG.) Obviously, with CX canceling all JFK, ORD, IAD, SFO and SEA, it just may not be possible to rebook right now. after I paid 100$ to change dates a little back .
already cancelling and only refund offering .
Has someone contacted Cathay pacific to talk to them to try to change this ?
So frustrating that until I got mistake fare they will refund probably so little.

So just got off the phone with Cathay, was able to push my flight out past the original ticket validity
My previous ticket expired in november this year. I was able to book a new flight for december- 20, and of course no change fee was charged.
So give them a call, hold times were 1.5 hours.

I received the same email for the return trip that was booked for early May (rebooked before from its original date last fall).
I called and was able to change to a date in late August. My first flight on that ticket was in early September last year, I did not try changing the return to a date beyond a year from then.

I took my original flight in March 2019, and originally my 'return' flight was in March 2020. I had already moved it once in February to April 2020, and called again now that all flights from JFK -> HKG have been cancelled. The CSR told me that because I was past the original eligibility for my return date, they couldn't offer me an extension to 10 December 2020 like they are for most flights. They were able to let me move it to the first week of June 2020, with the caveat that if flight restrictions are extended they would let me extend it as well.

Oh, yes -- wait times were insanely short. Called the NYC number at 2pm on a Saturday; took about 3 minutes for the CSR to pick up. Total call time was under 30 minutes.

So... another data point. With all the June cancellations, my BOS didn't survive. They refused to reroute through LAX (even when offered to arrange own domestic transit to LAX), and only offered BOS with extension to July 2nd (first flight), citing "special fare".
