Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I would suggest anyone looking to extend due to canceled flights to call the HKG office. The current policy does allow for going beyond one year. (I would not expect to be put on any partner flights as there is a cost associated with that, whereas flying CX metal - with traffic down ~90% - is close to free.) I have found some agents to be quite accomodating to pushing flights. (Some less so.) It seems the general policy is to put you on the next available flight (typically the following month), but some have been good at pushing that a few days (or more).
My 2 cents - be nice, be calm, be specific, cite the policy, and, as always, when necessary, HUCA. Do not try and force it with any one agent. You do not want the dreaded notes in the ticket comment area. This is a global Pandemic and is new to everyone. Policies change rapidly. (Qatar just changed their unlimited changes another year to the end of 2021!) We have all seen CX adjust their policies several times as the pandemic wears on.

I followed your advice, called HK number and to my surprise it was fairly straightforward. I have been rebooked for 5 Jan - apparently the earliest when HAN flight operates (I swear I saw it available in GDS as early as 29 Nov), but couldn't have hoped for a better result.

I can confirm the "next available flight" policy data points as well. I had purchased two of the awesome fares directly from CX, had already flown one completely, and flew half of the second ticket with just the JFK-HKG-HAN "return" remaining. It was scheduled for April (canceled by CX), rebooked to August (canceled by CX), rebooked to December at the end of the ticket expiration (just canceled by CX last week).
When I called, the CX agent was pretty nonchalant about it and said it can be moved to the next available flight which is in January. I questioned the ticket expiration. He said that shouldn't be a problem. He'd just need to get the ticket office on the phone and ask them to modify it. As he was researching it, I noticed that my positioning flight to JFK was going to be quite expensive and asked him if putting me on CX 843 on January 3 might be possible. Again, he was very nonchalant about it, so I don't think it's set in stone that it has to be the very next available flight -- just pretty close after it. It sounds like the North America ticketing office is making it work for people.
One note: Don't wait too long to call after they cancel a flight or it will fall out of the system. It's still there but apparently not readily able to be pulled up by the average agent. I found that out the hard way when they canceled in April. When I finally called to rebook, it was quite a long time on the phone as the agent was dealing with supervisors to restore it to my profile so it could be modified further.

Nothing is going to open here in South East Asia for general tourist arrivals in the next 6 months that wouldn't involve a lengthy quarantine and complicated visa process by the embassy abroad (if available at all). Vietnam and Thailand are the two most difficult countries but others aren't much better in this regard. They are all closed right now without any signal of reopening.

Nothing is going to open here in South East Asia for general tourist arrivals in the next 6 months that wouldn't involve a lengthy quarantine and complicated visa process by the embassy abroad (if available at all). Vietnam and Thailand are the two most difficult countries but others aren't much better in this regard. They are all closed right now without any signal of reopening.

OK, Cathay Dragon has been merged into Cathay Pacific and the HKG-DAD route seems to have discontinued... Just got the e-mail and have not called yet. Do you think a rerouting could be possible to another destination outside Vietnam?

I received a generic email about the restructuring, but not one specifically regarding a flight cancellation of my HKG-DAD segment, which still shows as confirmed when I go to manage my booking. Does your segment actually show as cancelled?

It will take time to load the changes. The flights are still showing up in GDS (and will continue showing up in MMB as "Confirmed") but are zeroed out. With my JFK-HKG-HAN now moved to January I am hopeful that CX will take over the route and rebook accordingly.

If by some remote chance they stop flying to Vietnam, I think they will let you switch to another nearby situation. (Our HAN flight was canceled on one of these and we were able to switch to BKK. We did this at the club at HKG. Did not seem like a big deal to them.)
