I've seen EGP for sale at currency desks in the UK, but the rate is so awful you'd be crazy to to buy any.

Unless there's been a change, the official rate of exchange is used by all banks and (most) hotels in Egypt. And as you're going to be visiting one of the pre-immigration bank desks to get a visa, you can get cash there as well.

Remember that BA charges cancellation fees per fare component, not the highest of all of them. So to cancel a return journey you will pay the fee twice, once for the outbound component and once for the inbound component.

And if you have 2 stopovers, is the cancellation fee now x 4? Or still x 2?

OK. So cancellation should be EGP 750.00 for the entire ticket.

You still have exactly two fare components.

As noted upthread too, you have to visit a bank branch in the arrival hall to get your visa sticker (before standing in an immigration line). This is the best spot to buy EGPs for a brief stay. If you are planning to stay longer, then you may choose to get just enough to get started, and figure the rest later.

Finally, when you are done with your trip, remember to exchange leftover EGPs while still there, unless you are planning to return soon.

I will be arriving at 2am in Terminal 3, it seems it is connected to the Le Meridien with a bridge, but how far is it and safe at 2am? I will have checked luggage with me. It sounds still better to do the meet and greet? Would they do it at 2am?

I am SPG Gold, I should get an upgrade to Club level from what I have been reading on Tripadvisor at this property, right?

Actually it should be straightforward and safe, but my hesitation comes from this being your first time. So ask LM about pick up and or meet+greet.

CAI airport is full of life at that hour: I have had drivers meet me from hotels far away (downtown as well as Giza). You can ask LM without hesitation on that account. Almost certainly, they are doing it every night.

Whatever you do, arrange with LM. Do not entertain any local touts there who may approach you and offer to help this way or that.

Thanks for the info, really useful. A 'how long is a piece of string' question; for a 2 week visit, taking in Cairo, Alexandria and Luxor, how much GBP ought I to change? Given that I understand cash is king here and plastic only goes so far. Am a fairly lazy tourist who likes seeing by walking so it won't be out to the pyramids etc every day.

But maybe the strategy is buy too much then change back on the way out....?

And one other; is the visa valid for single or multiple entry?

TIA.

You're making heavy weather of this Exchanging cash is never a problem: you can exchange money at your hotel. There's no commission charged so there's no penalty to getting EGP as required.

There are ATMs too, but here you face charges for getting cash.

You can certainly use your credit card in hotels, many restaurants and higher-end shops. Some establishments might want you to pay their commission on credit card sales.

You can travel with Uber/Careem around Cairo, the journey debited to your card.

So for your longish stay I'd suggest handing over a hundred quid at the airport bank for visa and cash. This'll give you a healthy bundle of getting on for LE2000: it will go a long way in day to day small purchases (make sure you get plenty low denomination notes).

See how that goes and get more cash as required.

================================================== =====

Visa on arrival is single entry. You can get a multiple entry one from the consulate in London - but it's hardly worth it.

The visa purchase process at the airport is fast and painless, though if you really wanted to save a couple of minutes on your next visit, you could buy yourself two visa stickers and keep one tucked away for later,

IAN-UK has given you good advice and info above. I like to exchange about $100 (more or less what he is suggesting). Of course we need some cash to function, but carrying a lot of cash has its own risks, which is why traveller checks, credit cards, Apple Pay, etc were invented. I like to use cash only where absolutely necessary, otherwise using credit cards, Uber etc. Even if I end up paying a little more in commissions, the peace of mind would have been worth it.

Unlike many cities in the world, good CAI hotels offer honest and fair exchange rates.

Wherever using a credit card overseas, make sure the charge is in local currency (EGP here), and not in your home currency (GBP for you). Also, don't use debit cards.

The visa sticker you buy at the airport is for one entry, but the transaction is as smooth as buying a cup of coffee and you can buy more than one sticker if you so wish. Only the embassy/consulate can stamp a multiple entry visa in your passport and for most people the trouble won't be worth it.
