Thank you. What about arrival in Newark? Do I have to wait four hours for the train shown on my ticket?

And where is Metropark?

if youre on the return trip/the train leg is the last leg of your itin, you can just not do anything and drop it as there's nothing for them to cancel

if you actually do want to take the train, and dont want to wait that long, imo the agents at the train desk (on the train pier, after getting out of the airtrain gates, next to the dunking donuts) are very accommodating; if there is an earlier southbound NE regional train (usually there is unless you're traveling at midnite) they would put you on it; you probably wont get RDM, but if you can probably fight for it with united

Well, I am not so sure about having to take the train from ZFV.

I "flew" out of ZFV in Dec.'12 and simply picked up my train ticket in Trenton the night before my EWR flight, but never used the train. Went straight to EWR and had no problems.

As the OP noted, that's before the new Amtrak scanning.

And what if travel begins on the west coast, so that the 2 train rides are sandwiched between the flights?

well...then there's no real way to get out of it as far as i know. i mean you can stop at trenton or some other stop along the regional line, but there's by far a lot more stuff to do/stay at around 30th station...

You're saying that you can pick up the ticket anywhere from Amtrak?
NY Penn, Trenton, Stamford, Boston.... ??

^

So, do you think this would work?

Buy a ticket that starts in ZFV
Pick up the ticket at Trenton before the train is scheduled to depart ZFV.
Get on the ticketed Amtrak train from ZFV-EWR at Trenton.
Make sure that the conductor scans the ticket.

Or the other direction... ???
A ZVE-EWR train
Get the ticket at NY Penn.
Get on the assigned train to EWR

From my experience, you need to take the train to and from the ticketed cities. The Amtrak Conductors scan your tix with an iphone like device. They seem to be linked or communicate to UA. Another thread here 'The Ultimate.." has lots of information on this. If you dont ride the rails for the ticketed itineary you my be cancelled on future flights on the Itineary. YMMV Safe Travels
