You can, however, pick up your ticket in NY Penn, take NJ Transit to Metropark, and then hop on the Amtrak train there rather than going all the way down to ZFV. You must ride the train that is noted on the ticket though. You can't just hop on any Amtrak train.

Well, I am not so sure about having to take the train from ZFV.

I "flew" out of ZFV in Dec.'12 and simply picked up my train ticket in Trenton the night before my EWR flight, but never used the train. Went straight to EWR and had no problems.
