Any examples of cheap LCC flights that may work from PVG for this 48-hour (or is it 72-hour?) transit deal? Just wonder how cheap and how short these LCC flights could be.

Did any one actually try using an award ticket to get a transit visa stamp but cancel the award flight after clearing the immigration? If so, any problem on the return?

Asked and answered in TWOV thread on that in China forum. This method is not advised.

Never found a cheap fare ex PEK or PVG, did use UA miles for onward travel. Did enjoy a day or two in both Beijing and Shanghai @:-) ^

Thanks for the info.

May be PbodyPhoto can provide example of cheap LCC flights from PVG (or PEK) ;-)

Just book a refundable ticket with either cash or miles (if status would give you free cancellation). Far easier than trying to find the cheapest ticket.

See post #557 above; this method "is not advised".

Did you have any personal experience to share about canceling such refundable ticket and had no problem leaving PVG (or PEK)? Thanks.

UA: LAX-SOF/OTP/BUD, from $722. Good Nov-Mar.

Sample dates for SOF: 27NOV - 01DEC; $722
Sample dates for BUD: 07NOV - 11NOV; $739

You can also o/j, such as into BUD and return from OTP.

K fare; cheapest fares seem to be for a mix of UA and LH metal, but you can get all-UA metal TATL for about $20 more.

I did this with an onward Y CX ticket with no problem. Have that ticket depart after your scheduled return trip. I just called for refund after I got home.

Better yet, come in from US and connect return through NRT or another 3rd country. This is straightforward and allowed.

There is a China thread on this topic.

UA: SFO-ITO, lots of dates in September and beyond, N fare $352+

route via LAX for best mileage (~3000 each way), ~5.7cpm

seems like HA has posted a few fare "sales" and UA is matching some of them
