Question QUESTION: Upgrading Marriott Visa

Please don't tell me this should be in the "Credit Card" forum. I don't monitor that forum... do you?

I just recently upgraded my Chase Marriott Reward (basic) Visa to the Premier so that I would get the 15 nights credit this year. (I was going to miss platinum elite by about 12 nights.)

Anyway, here is my question...

Can anyone that has dones this same upgrade confirm that:
1) I will or will not be charged the annual fee. (I am still in my 1st "free" year of the original visa.)

2) If I DON'T get charged the new annual fee until next year... will I still receive the 15 nights this year?!?

Thanks!

My experience:

I upgraded. Got the 15 nights promptly. Got billed the higher fee when my normal annual payment was due (i.e., not at the time of conversion).

Of course, YMMV. And, I don't know if the same would apply where you were on the "first year free" year instead of an annual renewal for which you had paid the annual fee.

Did they let you upgrade the existing account, or did close the regular one and gave you the Premier?
Did your account number change?

Account number stayed the same. Got the new "black" card, but same VISA number.

We would never tell you to go the Credit Card forum for a Marriott CC question.

But we might let you know that quite a bit has been discussed about upgrading a current Signature Visa to the Premier card. Check out this thread (the upgrade info begins around post #31): http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...3&page=3&pp=15

Of course this is a fairly long thread, but there is a lot of information in there. It just may take a little bit to sift through it all first though.

Not really. Why go with no credit card when you can get more perks by using it to spend the same money that you would spend anyway.

Update on "old" Marriott card

I still have the "old" Marriott card with a $30 annual fee because I missed out on upgrading early to get the 15,000 bonus points. The $30 fee came up on this month's statement and I asked to have it waived. Agent refused, saying that they cannot do that "according to our agreement with Marriott". That is nonsense, of course, but I didn't dispute it. Instead, I asked for the same 3,000 bonus points (1 cent per point) that I got last year when I made this request. Agent said they'd "submit a memo to marketing". Called yesterday for update and spoke with different agent who said my request had been granted. She also indicated that they do this routinely for anyone who calls and disputes the $30 annual fee.

OK, after reading all of this I still have a question.

I have a NON-MR Chase Visa. Has anyone gotten Chase to convert a non-MR Chase card over to a the MR Premier card? For a variety of reasons, I don't want to have to go through the entire application process, just convert a card, and take the bonuses.

Thanks.

I have not done it but have inquired with Chase and they said it is not a problem all you have to do is call....

I wouldn't think it would be a problem either. If they can convert a MR Visa into a Premier Visa, then there is no reason they couldn't convert other cards over either.

I suspect your biggest problem with doing that may be that they will try to talk you into keeping your original card and applying for Premier card. Thus giving you two cards.

Cool. I'll try calling tomorrow.

The original card has little use anyway, it was dormant for about 15 months until I started using it for Megabonus. As a "no-fee" card with lower interest rates, I don't suspect that they'll want me to keep it - after all, I'm a deadbeat because I pay my balance off each month, hence they get no interest from me....

Well, I talked to Chase (customer service for the existing card). They said they would do an account trade, but the sign-up bonuses will not apply.

I'm not quite ready to give up yet. Anyone have any thoughts on how to approach them on rethinking the position?

You could just apply for the new card to get the sign up bonuses. Then, you could close your old card and combine the credit lines on your new card.

I could, but for a number of reasons I don't want to do that. Perhaps there is another approach. After all, if I convert the account, when would the 15 nights accrue? Immediately? Or would I have to wait a year.
