My experience:

I upgraded. Got the 15 nights promptly. Got billed the higher fee when my normal annual payment was due (i.e., not at the time of conversion).

Of course, YMMV. And, I don't know if the same would apply where you were on the "first year free" year instead of an annual renewal for which you had paid the annual fee.
