With Marriott's rolling qualification, they update their system ever other Monday (next one is Feb 13), so if you acquired 30 nights in 2005, and 20 nights in January 2006, the status would not update online to Gold until that specific Monday or sometimes Tuesday.
If you have already achieved your 50, and when you check-in for another stay and it shows you as Silver, just have the front desk call customer service, and it should be straightened out. It helps when you want to access the conceriege level

Interestingly, it also says "Additional nights needed to maintain Platinum: 36", although I've only stayed 14 nights this year (so far). Isn't 50 nights in a year needed just to keep Gold?

When I hit the rolling tier, it showed 50 nights to hit Platinum next time as yours is now. That was automatically updated a few days later and now shows I need 75.

It does seem to be assessed as rolling - for new entrants to the program, anyway.
I've been given platinum, but I had not asked. I joined during the year - March, I think, stayed 68 nights so ended up gold. Have not had a membership card yet. In January, the online system said gold, 0 nights stayed, 75 required for platinum.
I stayed another 10 days or so during January. Actually, these seemed to take a long time to get posted. Just checked now - online system is saying I have platinum status, and that I have stayed those january nights towards renewal.
So, for new entrants at least, the 'year' seems to be a rolling year.
I think I'll choose to stay with them again, now.

Just a quick update that the rolling year status check is still working. I just hit my 20th night this year, added to my 55 nights from April-Dec of last year and I was upgraded to Platinum. I was Platinum back in 2001 I believe so it's not completely for "newbies" as has been previously posted. Thanks Marriott!

Quick note that I didn't know:
If you check in after midnight, make sure you get credit for that night. I had a stay a few weeks back where I checked in at 3am (and paid for that night), but found out today, that I was given Marriott points for that night, but not credit for nights stayed, which in turn affects your elite status requalification. A simple call to Marriott customer service will fix the issue.

I read every post in this and the other two discussions and it still does not explain why I am Platinum...So far this year I have 5 nights plus 15 for the new card. On a rolling 12 month period I would have had a total of 45 nights, including the 15 bonus nights. ^ Not sure why, but I ain't complaining. Just hoping they do not take it away and go, oops, mistake because that would be a
