We really need to see the terms and conditions because there are plenty of reports of Marriott gold and platinums struggling to get the 4 p.m. late checkout as it presently stands. Will Marriott condition it? That's yet to be seen.

A little disappointing, but not totally unexpected, that the premium cards only get gold status. The existing Ritz premium card gets Marriott Gold in the current program, which is obviously much more valuable (and harder to obtain) than the gold of the future program. But I suspect that if they offered the basic platinum status with the premium cards, they would not have been able to offer all of those great benefits (breakfast, lounge access, etc.).
I wonder if I can get my Ritz-Carlton Visa membership fee refunded.

Except anyone with a credit card will be a silver-elite. As Delta used to say, if everyone is an elite then nobody is an elite.
In reality, I think the names will be confusing for hotels, which already struggle to deliver. There are three levels of platinum with very confusing and similar names. Marriott could have came up with a better naming convention. For purposes of upgrades, Marriott better define in the terms and conditions that a platinum-premier takes precedence over a platinum and a platinum-premier ambassador takes precedence over platinum-premier and platinum.
The big question is whether there will be any unpublished status or sub-status over platinum-premier ambassador. For example, will platinum 5-star be continued for friends of Marriott? And will there be a new version of platinum-premier for anyone who exceeds $50,000 and 150 nights?

AFAIK new elite tier names are still to be determined and announced later.

I don't think that's a correct interpretation. You have until 12/31/2018 to earn Platinum with stays at SPG properties, which will carry you through 2019 as a Marriott Platinum in the new program. Then, EFFECTIVE Jan 1, 2019 - they will not be counting stays in the combined program.
https://members.marriott.com/spg/
https://members.marriott.com/spg/
- Starting January 1, 2019, Elite status will be achieved on nights and not on stays. Until then, SPG members can achieve status based on stays at SPG-associated brands only, but can also qualify based on nights at any of the 29 brands.
EG, I had 75+ nights with Marriott in 2017, which gives me Marriott Plat, which matched over to SPG Plat, and is effectively similar to the new PP. There doesn't seem to be any way to renew that level via stays only. Am I missing something?

So I assume the SPG Gold status earned from the American Express Platinum card (which matched to Marriott Gold) will now become Marriott Platinum? That's assuming Amex doesn't ditch the benefit with Marriott and instead either just go solo with Hilton or add another hotel partner... In that case things haven't changed tooooo much, obviously we wouldn't see the annual choice benefit but we never saw anything like that anyway just from credit card status. I'm also curious about the 4pm check out since now it doesn't seem like that is based on availability. I assume if I request it then I'll be guaranteed it, unless it's a resort or convention center location? (Btw, have you had to actual request 4pm before, or just the late check out, I've only done it once or twice with my Marriott Gold and have only been told "sure, you can check out at 1:30pm" or something)
I have the Amex Biz Plat as an AU, the SPG personal card, and the SPG Biz. Will probably close out the two SPG cards and just get their new Loyalty one - the $75k spend is do-able for me.

I haven't really looked at the points earning right now since I don't stay enough with any specific brand to really rack up the points, maybe that was a big downward hit with this new program, but I usually base my stays first on location and then price. For some reason my luck NEVER allows me to just pick one brand since the handful of routine vacation spots seem to either have a Hilton close to where I need or a Marriott close, or an independent hotel or something, so maintaining the same level of perks is what I'm curious/focused on.

Newb question but does Marriott soft land to next lowest tier at the beginning of a new year? It looks like current Marriott Plats with be upgraded to Plat Premier on Aug 1. Will they soft land back to Plat on Mar 1, 2019?
Thanks

Well damn, that is a big downgrade and makes holding onto a $550 annual fee card a lot harder now. I like the Delta/Amex lounge access and the Hotel benefits. I don't really use the Uber perk, at least no where near enough to actually "make back" the possible $200 and the airline fee benefit, while nice, isn't as good as with the new high end Amex Hilton card....
I'll probably try to ditch that product and shift everything to the CSR card or at least downgrade the Amex to something else. Man, I really don't want to be opening cards or closing accounts since I'll be going to a mortgage in the next year or so and age of credit is really the only "ding" I have on my credit history (just over 800 right now, but average age is showing only like ~2 years because I only had one or two credit cards for 10+ years and in the last 2 years got the Amex, CSR, an auto lease, and a small unsecured loan [which is now paid off]. Perfect payment history, just happened new job meant being able to have more fun and look at the high end credit cards and the loan was basically to just try to diversify my accounts on my credit history)

OK, makes sense. But no way to qualify for 2019 PP via stays as far as I can see.

Marriott status has "always" been based on nights, not stays.
SPG allowed stays to be used to qualify for Gold and PlatMinus, but NOT ever Plat50, Plat75, or Ambassador.

Indeed, in my years as an SPG Plat, there were *some* Starwoods that provided utterly atrocious excuses for "breakfast". Otherwise good hotels, W's and Westins. It was embarrassing. I stayed in one that literally gave out shrink-wrapped muffins like you'd get for 99 cents at a gas station. That one was a W.
Me’thinks you may be confused, remember wrongly, or suffer some form of brand mis-identification.
I think I always knew the Ritz lounges would be off-limits since they're pretty amazing all-day food and drink spreads. I kind of had limited hope we'd get a restaurant option. But as you said, we all now have access to St. Regis, and I tend to like their style/decor a little better than Ritz anyway.
I am surprised that Ritz Carlton and Edition won’t be offering a breakfast benefit, however. It seems such a fairly easy and obvious addition, at least even for Platinum 75 and 100 level. But the owners probably balked. So perhaps St Regis and W will be preferred by more elites looking for that breakfast benefit.

And how will they count LT tenure year? LTPP is out of option for SPG-only members, but how about this man? Would he become LTPP or LTP?

Is there any level that will allow BOTH the welcome amenity (ie, points) AND comp breakfast, or are they all still pretty much either/or? Yes, I can eat a crap breakfast in the lounge of the FS properties I stay at (when they even offer a lounge) but that's not what I'm looking for.
Also, I didn't see any change to lounge/breakfast access at resort properties--something I was really hoping for at the top tiers (75+ nights).
