For a recent stay at a Residence Inn my bill was slipped under the door.
My favorite story about receipts is at a Courtyard by Marriott. They didn't slip them under the door, but left them in front of it. Thus I could see that Priceline did give me a very good deal, as I had paid much less for my room than the other folks on the floor. ($37 v. $129)

I can't stand having an invoice slipped under my door. Not only does it confirm that the build is of shoddy quality (since rooms should be sealed) but it smacks of 'time for you to leave."

Is the poorly fit door worth it?
Isn't it time for hoteliers to abandon the archaic practice of slipping paper under a door that doesn't tightly fit at floor level? Hallway noise nearly always appears on the short list of a traveler's hotel room irritants, and it's bad enough that in most rooms there's only a single door between hallway and accommodation. The unnecessary gap between door bottom and floor is the main reason unwanted hallway noise (and light) enters guest rooms. In other construction, this would be considered evidence of poor design or installation.

I recall reading about "receipt slipped under the door" policies a while back, maybe here, or maybe in the Travel column in the Washington Post. In this case, the reason for discontinuing it was guest safety/security. If there was a portion of the paper sticking out in the hallway, someone could pull it out and find out who was in the room.
Lots of possible excuses, all of which save the hotel some money.

At an RI in California last week there was no receipt under the door. I was surprised, since I have come to expect one. I, too, like the paper receipt and always check it for errors. However, an email -- before expected checkout -- would be okay.

Great theory about going green et al. You cannot count on the hotel emailing you a receipt. Appearing on your TV screen means little for your records. So another 10mins built into the morning schedule to obtain a receipt and look it over for errors and get it corrected. We're all doing our part for the ecology, yes we are.

I absolutely agree that the receipt under the door is a security risk, I've always thought so, especially when my full name, address and loyalty program number is sticking out in the hallway. If I'm sleeping at an airport hotel prior to an early flight, anyone could just be-bop over to my house and break in, pretty confident that I'm on my way somewhere.

- A criminal will happen to see it
- Decide to go to your house?
Especially as, they don't know that the house doesn't have someone else sleeping in it.
