I am in similar situations with 2 kids. I decided to make me CP and one of my kid CP. That way I can use the benefit when I travel with just my spouse.

From the Wiki......
If you are unsure where you will use your 7 night stay, when you request the package, just ask for a category 1-5 hotel. That way you are out of the least number of points. If later, you decide to book for a higher level category, then you can do so and pay the difference the travel package points I have no need for the hotel until November 2018. The hotel we will be staying at ( Courtyard Fort Lauderdale Beach) is currently a cat 7 so I will buy a cat 7 package. Should the hotel go up in price ( points) before I book (December 2017) and I didn't have enough Marriott points could I pay the difference in cash ? We have plenty of Marriott points but I am going to book this in my wifes name as I already have CP for 2017. I need to transfer 330K to her Marriott account for the TP and should the Marriott/SPG transfers be shut down before we book the cert she wouldn't have any points in her Marriott account to upgrade the TP hotel cert. |

Thanks everyone. Yeah I figured I could transfer to her account however I have the higher hotel status so I was hoping to book the TP with the certificate in my name but get the CP in her name.
Also I don't believe Amex lets you transfer between spouse accounts anymore, right? I should just be able to transfer to my SPG account and then to my wife's Marriott in that case, correct? |

This year I've lost my CP, the first time since 2002 or so. No business travel anymore and new obligations keep me tied and close to home. Very lightly used over the years though, just 1 RT last year. But the heart misses what it doesn't have (ego) and there are always dreams. With the last chance for a MR>WN travel package, it seems foolish not to pull the trigger based on these conclusions: 250,000 MR gets 7 nights (Cat 5) equivalent cost (6 x 25,000=) 150,000 leaving 100,000 for the WN piece. Downside is using within 2 years. 100,000 WN at 1.4 cents per equals $1,400 in airfare, $1,400/4 nights = $350 a night (a very highly unlikely Cat 5 redemption rate). So that seems like a bargain to me. Even a $1000 Amazon gift card is a possibility. Plus getting 90% of the way towards an almost 2 year, 6 changes CP that is easily finished with CC spend? Almost "free" ? What am I missing. If it matters, I am overflushed with WN, MR and SPG points already... Thanks for poking holes. |
I just bought my travel package cat 1-5 for 270k MR with 120k rapid rewards to southwest.
I'll let everyone know if it goes through ok but afaik, it should be fine. |
How long is the 7-night marriott cert good for? I'd like to request the package now to get the CP, but wouldn't be planning to use the cert until March of '18. Will that be a problem?
Also, any recent data points on availability of the 5-night version for non-vacation club folks? Thanks! |

I ordered my TP on the 4th. (still in the time that you couldn't get the CP from it). My 120,000 points posted to SW today (6th). The CP indicator gauge on SW is "full", but system doesn't have option to assign CP yet. I recall in the past that it did take a few days to assign the CP or I just called in.

So if you had a Cat 7 Certificate and the Hotel became a Cat 8, you can not pay to make your certificate a Category 8. I guess technically you could pay by buying points to make up the difference but don't think that is what you are asking. |

One comment about how long you can use the Marriott 7 night certificate: they are good for a year, and as beltline stated you can extend them for a year. That doesn't add on the time you can book in advance. So you could get a cert this month, extend for a year next January, and then book your room in January 2019 for 11-12 months out. So technically you may not actually use it for almost 3 years. It's a great deal.

Is this true? With other Marriott certs (Chase anniversary and MegaBonus certs, specifically), they have to be used by the deadline, not just booked. That's not the same for TP certs?

I ordered my package today to get the Southwest CP. I did the 5 night package. I did not mention that I own a Marriott timeshare and they didn't ask. I actually do own one but they never asked. Psyched for upcoming trip and getting my CP back for two years.
