Taste of Gold/Platinum
You are given gold/platinum status for 90 days, and you must complete a certain number of nights/stays to retain that status for the remainder of the year plus the following year. This promotion is targeted only.

Road to Gold/Platinum (a.k.a. Gold/Platinum Challenge)
Currently, this will allow you to move up one level with a shortened stay criteria. You have 90 days to complete 6/9 stays to receive Gold/Platinum status. If you do no qualify, you are eligible to start another challenge one year and one day after the 90th day of the challenge you just did. When you sign up, the MR CSR should tell you the date you are eligible to do another challenge.

FAQ

Q: What qualifies as a stay?
A: One paid night at a Marriott-brand (including Ritz-Carlton Hotels) hotel. Cash+points rate does not qualify. SPG hotels does not qualify (as of 03/2017). Some exclusions may apply, someone please help fill this in.

Q: Can I simply book multiple, consecutive one-night stays at the same hotel?
A: No.

Q: Can I jump between multiple Marriotts in the area?
A: Yes. As long as you book at least one night at each property. Special care must be taken if the Marriott properties are next to each other. They may share the same back-office. While you may book one night at each property on consecutive nights, which should count as two stays, it may only count as one stay. A call to Marriott Rewards should split them up correctly.

Q: Can I book multiple nights at different properties for the same night to get multiple stay credits?
A: No. Regardless how many different places you book for the same night, it all counts as one stay.

Q: Can I sign up for both Gold and Platinum Challenges at the same time?
A: No. Only one challenge per year.

Q: I'm Silver, can I do the Platinum challenge?
A: No. This is only a one-level promotion. You are only eligible for the Gold challenge.

Q: Can a non-elite do the Gold Challenge
A: No. Must be Silver.

Q: I just completed my 6th/9th stay. When should I see my new status?
A: Good job! Your new status should appear after your 6th/9th stay posts to your account.

Q: Can I book a meeting to get a stay credit?
A: No. You will only receive 10 night credits, not a stay credit.

Regading the emails:
- than can either be a sign that there is no procedure and it's up to the employee to decide if he wants to send an email or not
- or it can be a recent change in procedures

I got an email confirmation regarding my challenge I started in June this year. This is how mine looked :

Dear XXXXXXXXXXXX,

I have now registered your account for a Gold Elite Status challenge. This registration is pending and will be processed within three business days. The dates of this offer are from today to October 31, 2017.

(Since this is an exception, please note that the dates cannot be changed or extended).

Once six qualifying paid stays post to your account during the trial dates your account status will be upgraded to Gold Elite through January 2019.

You can view the complete qualifications for earning stay credit at the following link:

http://marriott.com/rewards/terms/earning.mi

If your account status is upgraded, a new membership card will be issued and should arrive within four to five weeks. You would then need to have at least 50 Elite nights post to your account in 2018 to renew this status for all of 2019.

We are always happy to assist you with your Marriott Rewards account. Thank you for choosing Marriott.

Sincerely,

XXXXXXXXXXXXX

I got the 20 more days before Dec 31 and requal plat challenge thing as I checked out of the hotel for the 26 days stay, but now, after the additional 5 day stay I am at 73 days total....BUT
I am at 5 out of 20 days to requal, yet i will requal the old fashioned way before I requal under their challenge

Will this cause problems or will I just requal the old fashioned way and the challenge just go away?

I will end at 83 days total, yet 15 out of 20 on the challenge
You will fail the challenge and that will have no effect upon qualification the traditional way. The worst that could happen is they refuse to let you attempt another challenge in the near future (five years maybe?). I am only nine nights away for LTP yet my account status page shows 75 nights needed to earn Plat again. They don't worry about dealing with the corner cases in the marketing material and will handle it as it occurs.

I wouldn't be surprised if the option in 2017 isn't the same in 2018. With Marriott Rewards and SPG apparently scheduled to be combined into a new program, some of these expedited ways to acquire/retain elite status with Marriott/Starwood may be put stopped at least in some ways.

This wasn't even a challenge per se, some emailed promotion, I never even asked for it, just showed up on my profile

Well, I do hope that they won't back off at least in cases of clients who were promised such challenge already.

I was a gold member and I did the Platinum Elite Challenge 5 months ago in August! I was told I am Platinum Elite through the whole calendar year of 2018. I was reading a couple posts above, does it run longer then that? Will this challenge be available in 2018 for 2019 with the merger? Are their any prerequisites for the challenge? Do I have to have 50 nights stayed to try for 9 nights in 90 days?

I opted for Platinum Challenge - CSR confirmed if I qualify to platinum starting Jan first - I'll have Platinum status for rest of 2018 + Full year of 2019 and Jan/Feb 2020 (thats when Plat status reset).

Question :
Can I book 9 separate night at same hotel with atleast 1 day gap in between booking? I found hotel with $40 per night stay. so that each booking is counted as separate stay.

Also, does it matter if you book via Member exclusive rate on Marriott website? Do stay still count towards Plat Challenge?

Yes, according to the T&Cs consecutive stays regardless of check outs and check ins will count as one stay. You can break up these stays with nights credited to another account or no account. Any paid booking on Marriott.com should count, some corporate booking sites may also count (i.e. Concur).

As long as it is not consecutive at the same hotel, should be fine. I plan doing the same myself, although decided move between two properties (one night here, one night there, and so on).

I received an email in asking me to accept the challenge and then a follow up email confirming I was enrolled in the challenge. However, I enrolled by contacting the admin on the Marriott Insiders page rather than calling in.

I did did not receive an email after completing the challenge though, my status updated automatically once the final stay posted.

I believe either you should receive Platinum or be in-eligible for Challenge if your Gold status is expiring before 90 days. Also, I'm not sure why start challenge in Jan 18. Start right away and if you're doing mattress run - then don't need to wait till Gold expire.
