We'll be spending Sat. - Mon. at Marriott SFO. Wife is Gold Member. Is CL open there on weekends? If not, are we entitled to comp. breakfast at hotel restaurant? We've stayed here several times before, but never as elite member. Any other perks available? Free internet? Thanks.

Negative on all. No lounge Fri evening through Sun morning. No free breakie on weekends. No free 'net.
You'll probably get a room on the CL floor, along with all the other elites. You get to walk by the locked lounge on the way to your room. That's it.

Well that stinks. Do you know of any other Marriott in the SFO airport area that would show greater hospitality to elites on weekends? Seems to me a Gold member should get some perks thrown in.

It's not right at the airport but the San Mateo hotel is one of the best in the chain and knows how to treat elite guests. CL is not open on weekends either, but we've always received breakfast certs for the restaurant, great rooms, and excellent staff.

That's a bummer. Last April I got breakfast coupons for the weekend when the lounge was closed, but the agent said they didn't have to give them to me.
Not nearby, but the Marriott Fremont is half the price and you get free breakfast and dinner when the lounge is closed.

The front desk associate who checked me in took it upon himself to upgrade me simply because he noticed that we were a party of three. I didn't ask for the upgrade....or the second welcome gift. But as far as I'm concerned the hotel did a great job of showing greater hospitality/throwing in some perks for me as an elite....especially considering what I was paying. Brekkie or no brekkie.

I stayed at the SFO airport FS on a Saturday night back in October. The hotel was fairly full with a couple of weddings going on and other events. I had a very low weekend rate, but still got upgraded to a suite and had a welcome gift sent up to the room (in addition to my standard arrival gift).

The San Mateo property is the old Dunphey Hotel. I stayed there a number of times in the mid 80s. It sat vacant for a few years, and I thought it was going to be be bulldozed.
But....then along came Marriott. I stayed in early 2003 shortly after it re-opened. Marriott did a nice job bringing it back. Even better than the Dunphey, which was a pretty nice place. They still hadn't gotten all the bugs out when we stayed, but by all accounts they've got their act together now.
I had a three night weekend stay. No breakfast, but I did get an upgrade to a suite....sort of. I say "sort of" because it was actually just a large room with front and rear entry. A rather odd setup, but then again the Dunphey had been a rather quirky, rambling Hotel.
As for "insisting on the weekend breakfast". Always a good idea to ask. When I do, I'm probably batting around 75%. But probably about half the time, for whatever reason, I don't care/don't have time/meeting someone somewhere else....so I don't bother asking. Then again, if the free brekkie is really important to me, I make it a point to be sure it's offered before I reserve.

Well, I'm really tempted to move the rez to the San Mateo property, but the better half says she is prepared to give them hell if they don't at least give us the breakfast coupons at the SFO property (thanks you Kevino for the tip) - and she can be very convincing...so we'll see. But thanks to everyone for your feedback. It's very much appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for his/her advice. We'll definitely take a softer tact in dealing with the hotel folks. As my lawyer says, "Honey catches more flies than vinegar." I appreciate your advice and now know the breakfast isn't an entitlement on weekends.

Very interesting strategy. Personally, I try to save "hell" for when I'm actually entitled to something but maybe you're a I-won't-get-them-if-I-don't-ask-for-them type.

Thank you for reminding me of the Dunphy. I also stayed there several times in that same era. At that time, it and the old Hyatt House (reputedly, the nation's second airport-specific hotel) were the top-shelf SFO-area hotels.
