The San Mateo property is the old Dunphey Hotel. I stayed there a number of times in the mid 80s. It sat vacant for a few years, and I thought it was going to be be bulldozed.

But....then along came Marriott. I stayed in early 2003 shortly after it re-opened. Marriott did a nice job bringing it back. Even better than the Dunphey, which was a pretty nice place. They still hadn't gotten all the bugs out when we stayed, but by all accounts they've got their act together now.

I had a three night weekend stay. No breakfast, but I did get an upgrade to a suite....sort of. I say "sort of" because it was actually just a large room with front and rear entry. A rather odd setup, but then again the Dunphey had been a rather quirky, rambling Hotel.

As for "insisting on the weekend breakfast". Always a good idea to ask. When I do, I'm probably batting around 75%. But probably about half the time, for whatever reason, I don't care/don't have time/meeting someone somewhere else....so I don't bother asking. Then again, if the free brekkie is really important to me, I make it a point to be sure it's offered before I reserve.
