Acceptable time for houskeeping
@the Marriott in Delray Beach right now -- 337pm and my room has still not been made up for the day.
So, what's your cutoff time for what's acceptable as timely? Would you have said something to staff?

On busy days, sometimes my room hasn't been cleaned until nearly 5pm. Did you have your do not disturb sign up at all today? If they were in your area when the sign was up, you can get pushed back to the next pass through the floor.
If I have any particular plans, I generally call the FD in the morning and request that the room be done by a certain time. They are pretty good at accomodating the request.

If you wanted it made up earlier, did you inform the front desk or housekeeping? I'm not sure hard working housekeeping personnel need me to tell them what time is "acceptable".

I find making up the rooms late - the norm for most Marriotts. If you are not out by say 9am - you room could be delayed all day. Many times I have departed at say 11am and returned at 4pm and the room has not been serviced.
This tends to be one of my beefs with Marriott in addition to many times not be able to check in before 3pm - when rooms are made up. Although since I have been Platinum - I can usually check in upon arrival if after 12 pm.

I must be staying at different hotels than everyone else. I always put a DND sign up. Otherwise, housekeeping starts around 8 am (M-F) and 9 am on the weekends and holidays. They will get to everyone before 2:30 pm IME.
As for early check-ins, that might conflict with late checkouts if there are a lot of elite guests or if there are a lot of people checking out (since a new room requires more effort to clean than for someone who is staying another night).

I must be staying at dif hotels too. I rarely encounter the late cleaning unless the hotel is full. And usually in those instances I'll call & say I'll be out until xx, could you have someone come in before then, and as someone else mentioned they're usually pretty good about accomodating me. There are times, as also mentioned, when I have the DND on because I want to sleep in, so I'm not in the first pass. Quite often there's a card under the door saying they saw DND & to call them when I want it cleaned.

My experience at resorts is that whatever time we get back from the beach/pool needing showers housekeeping will be there, be it 11:00 am or 4:00 pm.

I've stopped back in my room at 1530 and it's still not made up, but I tend to not leave 'till around 9:30-10:30 for work.

When I leave the room, I tell the housekeeping staff on the floor that my room is now available for cleaning, and that works. If there is no staff, I tell the front desk. Never been a problem at Marriott -- Hilton is a different story, IME.

Like most things that are important to you while staying, all you need to do is give a friendly reminder to the f.d. staff.
No staff wants you to be unhappy, especially during these economic times... all of our stays are valuable, regardless of the aura presented by some staff members.
Just give a reminder.. costs nothing, requires little time/effort and the results will normally have you enjoying your stay with maxium pleasure.

Yes, I've had maybe a couple of times when the room wasn't made up until late afternoon, but that doesn't seem to be the norm.
I was also kind of grossed out at the St. Louis Marriott West last summer - stayed a week with my kids visiting family - the floor had crumbs and I was told that they only vacuum every other day. Ew. At least now I know that so I can mention I want the icky floor vacuumed daily.

having actually worked ffor Marriott years ago in various capacities, basically how HKPG works is
1) Clean any vacant /checked out room to get ready for checkin
2) Clean any special requests
3) Clean the "stayovers" last or in between waiting on the vacant rooms to clear.
So in general, there's a bunch of departures early to 10 am, then another deluge after 1pm when the late stayovers happen.
Weekends it gets even worse with the "pleasure traveler" as they all tend to arrive early and whine about needing early check in while those leaving always whine about having to be out by noon so stay late. That's why weekends you find HKPG knocking on the doors earlier hoping they are empty....we always scheduled HKPG an hour later on sat and sun since people were sleeping lateand they never had any rooms to clean until after 9 anyway.
Best advice, just ask for toom to be cleaned at special time and they will tend to honor that. Otherwise, they clean until 5 or 6 pm, and someone is going to be the last room cleaned. Rooms take genearally 20 to 30 minutes per to clean.

yeah i always find them clamoring to clean my room before i've even had breakfast in the lounge, too. it's annoying when on vaca to hear them knocking down doors int he hallway on the ONE day i get to sleep in.
once housekeeping even left the radio on in a room FULL BLAST with the door open when she left mid-clean to go to a staff meeting for an hour. normally, i'm not a complainer but that one had to be reported. rap at full blast at 9am = not cool.

I'm easy
I for sure wouldn't complain about it not being done....but then again I don't leave my room in too much of a mess and an un"maid" bed one day isn't going to kill me (heck I don't make it at home).
If I needed shampoo or towels I could just call the front desk and get them.
YMMV but I've never seen the need for daily cleaning of the hotel room.
