I do the same - like if we are going out, but want the room made up before we get back (and we're coming back to the room maybe during the day). I just call housekeeping when we're leaving and request the room be made up in the next couple of hours or so (also if I have any other requests, like extra towels or sheets changed, I mention them). I also tip housekeeping most of the time, as I am a total pain in requesting towels and things!

Yes, I've had maybe a couple of times when the room wasn't made up until late afternoon, but that doesn't seem to be the norm.

I was also kind of grossed out at the St. Louis Marriott West last summer - stayed a week with my kids visiting family - the floor had crumbs and I was told that they only vacuum every other day. Ew. At least now I know that so I can mention I want the icky floor vacuumed daily.
